On one hand, incredible.

On the other, it's hard not to think of better uses for that money.

Kids that are too young to have earned a &*%#@*& thing in their entire lives and getting pampered like little babies in places like this. Yes, get off my lawn, but this is just ridiculous. This is not an arms race I want to be a part of. However, I maintain that with the right coaches and mindset and fiscal responsibility, we can still compete on the field and, in the end, that's what matters.

We are not competing with Oregon in any fashion on the field right now!

It's the adults who put this into place, not the kids. I mean, look at that place. How could you not want to be able to use it?

Don't disagree one bit. Greedy adults are the much bigger problem.

Anyone who has purchased Nike products is somewhat of an accomplice to this.

Oregon should just get it over with and change their name to Nike University

Like we're going to compete with Phil Knight and $24billion in annual revenue. People in Eugene have unbelievable support for Nike even though its located closer to Portland. I used to call on Bi-Mart Headquartered in Eugene and every meeting you had to talk about the Ducks, Nike or Phil Knight for 10 minutes just to start a meeting. We always joked with the buyers about my Gamecocks playing Oregon State (beavers).

I don't understand what the anger is about. Is it jealousy/envy? There are questions about the ethics at Oregon, but assuming they're on the up-and-up (quite an assumption, but play along), then this is valuing the players in a new way. Instead of just looking at the field, it's taking the players and valuing them as individuals. It gives them an environment to hang out in, socialize in, do school work in, etc. They are putting their money into the players as people, quite a welcome change. These are people who are making the university (and Nike, yes) millions, risking injury in the process. So if in return, they get some fancy digs and a nice place to hang out, that's great for them.

Plus, on the note that there might be places the money could do more good, I don't know if that's true. For all we know, that money was earmarked for football (from either Nike or donors), so they felt that this was the best ROI if going towards the football program.

There was a multi-page thread on the basketball board a few months ago discussing whether it was ethical to play "The Hey Song" at home games due to Gary Glitter's (alleged) pedophilia. I think a lot of the concern over Nike's de facto ownership of Oregon athletics is for similar ethical issues (in addition to the whole "is this really what we want college athetics to be?" aspect).

Oh, somebody would still be complaining.
Anyway, I think I read someplace that Knight provided $50 million of this. Checking a little, he has supposedly given $230,000,000 to Oregon, mostly for athletics, and another $100,000,000 to their medical center for cancer research. Let the man spend his money the way the wants, it's sort of a free country.

Fair enough. I just wish that much money would go to something the majority of the students can enjoy, not a few hundred out of several thousand. I don't like the growing divide at many schools between athletes and the general population.

Well, this just reflects society, which campuses usually do. Rock/Movie/Sports stars are not the general public. It is a shame those who build wealth creating jobs and signing paychecks are derided and wealthy entertainers are sought out for their sage wisdom.

Ok, so maybe if those numbers were at least flipped, we could say the man has his priorities in order. If he's going to run sweatshops, it should at least benefit cancer research more than athletes.

If that's what they need to get kids to come to rainy Eugene instead of sunny California, so be it.  I don't fault them for wanting to have the best facilities around (isn't that what we want for Ohio?), especially when they're after 2- and 1-star talent that could easily wind up elsewhere in their own conference or one of the other AQs they might see on their schedule.  I thought the sculpture of the ducks flying was a bit much.  And so was the barber shop.  But at least they didn't have a tattoo parlor.

You seem to be missing the point entirely. It's HIS money and HIS priorities.

So should the donors of our IPF have given their 10+ Million to cancer research?

First off, I know for a fact that the Walter family is one of the most philanthropic in all of Central Ohio and probably the entire state. However, they are not boastful about it, but I guarantee they've given far more to charity than Ohio Athletics will ever see.

Secondly, it was OJ's knife and his priority. I am allowed to call him out on his choices. I mean, this IS a chat board, right? Isn't discussion surrounding the decisions of others ultimately what we discuss here?

not so sure that is what we primarily do, but regardless, the point you made is applicable for others as well as the Walters. Because of Knight's wealth, he becomes a target, in a sense, for anybody to judge. He is a public figure, but we can't, as mere mortals, know all the facts about him and what makes him tick. Personally, I'll leave the judging of Mr. Knight to others.

DCF,
I don't disagree with what, I think, is your overall point--that the expenditure on this is a bit grotesque. But I also think it's dangerous to suggest the money could be "better" spent when that's such a subjective debate. This is just the latest, and maybe most egregious example, of the D1A rat race. And as much as I have always wanted Ohio to compete at the highest division, I'm not interested in participating in this charade. I can also say I would not be pleased if Oregon were my alma mater.

I wonder what the Rocky Boots-funded Ohio athletes center would look like.  Would it have an outhouse?
