I need football, but camp doesn't open for another 2 and a half hours, and the Manziel autograph story seems like the only other general college football topic anyone is talking about, so, let's go....

(1) Which is the more realistic explanation: (a) Nate Fitch wanted to profit off his friend and took the money without Manziel knowing, or (b) Manziel knew about the money and didn't care b/c he hates that he has to play college football for another year and wanted an out?

(2) If you're Texas A&M, with Manziel you're a national title contender, and without him you're a 9-3/8-4 team at best. Do you take the risk and play him, or do you sit him and build for next year?

I'm not sure about the answer to (1).  There's going to be a lot of revisionist history going on from both sides, so nobody may know the actual truth.

As for (2), if I were Sumlin I would be giving my #2 QB as many reps with the starting squad as Manziel gets. if not more.  Even if he's cleared of the accusations, his head is definitely not with college football right now.  He has about eight toes to Canada or the NFL.  Tx A&M is probably a 9-3/8-4 team -- at best -- with or without Johnny Heisman.

Not sure what's going to happen, but this guy has made a lot of poor decisions that we know about. I'm doubting he plays another down of college football;he certainly appears to not want to stay in college. The way he's going so far, I'm afraid that the worst is to come.

The NCAA has proven time and time again to move about as slow as molasses on things like this. Look out how long they've taken to solve the Miami problem!

They see Johnny Manziel as $$$, not as a student-athlete, regardless of what they say. I'm betting this thing won't be solved till about week 12, and by then it will be out of everyone's minds and nothing will come out of it. He'll be in the NFL and making money and Texas A&M will probably get the slap on the wrist.

Moral of the story: Play him. It's not going to hurt you. Auburn did just fine when Cam Newton was being investigated.

The thing I can't get out of my mind is this: Manziel's family isn't poor by any stretch of the imagination. Is this kid really just that immature? Is he really that stupid?

The big question is who has had the roughest 7-8 months since the college football season of the three Heisman finalists? Is it Johnny Football, whose every transgression has been featured on the front page of ESPN.com? Is it Manti Te'o, who has appeared on Dr. Phil and other shows to talk about a fake girlfriend, had to issue declarations of his sexuality, and watch his once hot draft stock drop? Or is it Collin Klein, who had a remarkable senior season with Kansas State, but was not drafted and was not offered a free agent contract with any team? I don't believe he's now in any camp at all.

Believe it or not, I think I'd take Te'o's past only because he has the most likely football future.

Johnny Football is acting like a typical college kid that is being portrayed to be the devil because of obnoxious medai coverage.  I think these NCAA crackdowns on players doing stuff like this are dumb.  The NCAA spends so much time and money looking into little instances like this, when they should be figuring out how to fix their broken system.

Boo-hoo.  He gets kicked out of a frat party at Texas for being an a-hole.  He oversleeps at the Manning Camp and is sent home.  And he basically tells all his TA&M fans to go screw themselves, and ignores the help TA&M has been trying to offer.  (See Dodd's column.)  The guy is acting like the spoiled rich kid he really is.  (See the LA Times story about his lifestyle.)  They put the hammer down on the less-well-off O$U players who did the same thing.  Johnny Embarrassment doesn't even need the money (he allegedly used it to buy rims for his Benz).  Screw him.  If he can't wait to get out of College Station, then he should get the hell out.  He could play in Canada -- or his daddy could buy him a team.

Wow, I can't help but read your posts and think of Ron Burgandy letting you know to take a couple of plays off. He got kicked out of a party at a rival school...that's scandalous? Why? He may have run his mouth, but he's a competitor from a rival school! He's a 20 year-old kid who oversleeps...again, not a big deal. It was for a gig I bet he wasn't even paid for. So he got kicked off a job he wasn't getting a dime for. Not indicative of anything concerning. Now the big hammer drops...he may have gotten paid for signing his own name rather than somebody else getting paid for him signing his own name. I can't even feign anger on something so trivial. There are 87 items on ebay right now under the search "Johnny Manziel autograph". Each one is going for about $100. He gets ZERO of that. Yet you feel the need to call him 'Johnny Embarrassment'? You even went as far as to give the 'alleged' expenses for his 'alleged' income (none of which has been verified). Calm down on the anger.

No anger.  But he's definitely the wrong kid to be feeling sorry for because he's being exploited by the system. I would probably feel differently if he needed the money to help pay family or college expenses.  But here's a kid of great privilege who attains something all kids dream of but few achieve and he doesn't appreciate it.  Granted, with that success comes an enormous amount of notoriety that would be difficult for most kids his age to handle.  But he ignored the help he was offered.  He has a lot of resources at his disposal to handle his fame, but just doesn't use them.  Instead, he seems intent on bringing nothing but bad publicity for himself and his school.

It's only obnoxious because schools like us vote down rules to let the big boys pay their players. Take it up with Schauss and McDavis to pass rules to let this be semi-pro football. The NCAA just manages the rules the schools create.

Interesting note for the OSU haters, OSU took the penalties, A&M has hired big time law firms to keep the kid eligible, just like Auburn and Cam Newton. We may want to take swings at the big brother up the road, but the guys down South are the most notorious cheaters in the history of NCAA rules! And this may be the straw that breaks the big boys away from the rest of the college football world and speeds up the pay for play issue.

I side with any University pres and AD who say players should not be paid.  Just because it's being done illegally anyway doesn't mean you throw out the rules. Given he cost of higher education, the kids should be grateful they get a free education, including room/board. I know college football isn't easy... if it was, everyone would do it. But try sweeping floors or flipping burgers to pay for school and see how you like it. If the SEC wants to be the NFL junior, then let them. I don't want to be a part of it, and I don't want OHIO to be a part of it.

Especially with the cost of education today! One can't flip burgers and make it through at today's prices!

I agree with you. I was letting the kid know how he could change things. I think FBS is fine as it is. I don't want to be relegated to FCS.

The Vest signed a form when he knew some of his lads were in trouble.  Those up 33 played em when they shouldn't have and even played a bowl game when they knew they had violated numerous rules.  When did they step up and take the penalties?  Did Johnny's team know anything about these alegations last season while he played?

If he is found in violation and his U knew about it and dragged it out and played him and played a bowl game then they will be just like O$U.  But at this point T A&M has not reached that level of cheater.

Auburn knew, and they still fought the NCAA and won. The jury is out on what A&M knew. Facts are facts the SEC is the most penalized conference in NCAA HISTORY.

It's amazing that there are serious conversations among serious people in this nation's leadership as to whether bloggers get first amendment press protections, when time and time again it is bloggers who are actually researching records and telling the story in a manner that once upon a time was considered journalism.

Excellent work, sir. My only quibble is the part about the oil asset transfer being only for $10. That's standard legalese that would probably be included whether the transfer was for $100,000,000 or nothing. I'm not sure if Texas has a transfer tax on oil, gas, and mineral interests, but if it does, those records would be a more reliable source for determining purchase price. My guess is that this transfer probably was for no cash, since it was a transfer from the family to a family-controlled company, so the point you were trying to make probably stands.

It's a great read, Tim.  Well written, meticulously researched and edited.  I'm just not sure it's relevant to anything that Johnny Manziel and A&M face today.

If it turns out that a family conspiracy to profit from Johnny Football exists, then this is Exhibit A (well, along with the ESPN and SI pieces).  However, if Manziel somehow escapes discipline by A&M or the NCAA (how?) then this would fall into the category of piling on.

I must give Manziel the benefit of the doubt because he's still of a tender age, but it doesn't look good, does it?
