Because they don't explain their reasoning for categorizing each team, this is a good article to dismiss as junk.

Sooooooo...the boys down in Gainesville, FL are now saints? That school is a borderline sports factory with no academics whatsoever. Real admirable.

Teams' on-field scores are an average of four pre-season rankings. Off-field is based on four-year APR, recent NCAA violations, percentage of athletic department budget subsidized by student fees, number of player arrests in offseason and overall "ick" factor.

One thing that kills us bigtime on this scale is the percentage of athletic budget that comes from student fees.

That's the 800 lb gorilla in the room no one wants to talk about, and IMO the achilles heel of MAC schools.  And some other non BCS conferences.

It's actually a factor that could lead to the demise of the MAC as a major athletics conference.  If that revenue source drives up or implodes, the MAC could end up as a middling FCS conference.

Interesting comment Jeff.  We were in Boone last week and facilities wise, Appalachian State has anything but the feel of a middling school.  What surprised me, and I've been there many times, is how much bigger Boone is than Athens and I don't mean just in population - hotels, restaurants, stores, etc.  Bigger is not always better but it does give you a chance to put more seats in the stands and more dollars in the till.

Boone is more a tourist destination than Athens.(Ski areas and other outdoor activities)  One economic opportunity that I believe Athens County is failing to market and take advantage of is its potential as a retirement enclave.  That has been a critical component to economic development in western NC growth over the last 25 years.  Even Cullowhee, home of our old friend Larry Hunter is attracting relocating retirees.

Too off topic for Louisville week?
