One thing that kills us bigtime on this scale is the percentage of athletic budget that comes from student fees.
That's the 800 lb gorilla in the room no one wants to talk about, and IMO the achilles heel of MAC schools. And some other non BCS conferences.
It's actually a factor that could lead to the demise of the MAC as a major athletics conference. If that revenue source drives up or implodes, the MAC could end up as a middling FCS conference.
Interesting comment Jeff. We were in Boone last week and facilities wise, Appalachian State has anything but the feel of a middling school. What surprised me, and I've been there many times, is how much bigger Boone is than Athens and I don't mean just in population - hotels, restaurants, stores, etc. Bigger is not always better but it does give you a chance to put more seats in the stands and more dollars in the till.
