I have to do this every year in the hopes of getting someone excited. Here is "some dudes" list of the best marching bands in the MAC. http://www.hustlebelt.com/2013/8/16/4622774/2013-mac-positional-rankings-marching-bands

First of all, all these tapes (and some are awful) are from years past. They only gave the 110 one song, and the videos were uneven. So, please don't shoot the messenger. But damn, that UMass band is good. It's not for us (OHIO-Athens) or the OHIO culture, but much better than the other bands in the conference.

My personal thought was that Northern Illinois was the worst, even worse than Fiami. I don't know why BG was ranked so high - they sucked in my opinion. Even though UMASS was impressive, I'm not into baton twirlers and singers on a microphone have no business on a football field. This guy is probably a UMASS Alumni - haven't had time to check him out. I will. Your thoughts?

I'm not fan of ranking marching bands, how do you determine who the 10th best band is vs who is the 11th best band? It takes away from the spirit of what a band is when you try to define a specific pecking order.

If anything I think you could get away with putting bands into broad categories- poor, average, good, great, elite. Or something like that.

Trying to determine which band is better between a Show style band (Ohio) and Corps style band (UMass) is a futile effort. It really comes down to personal preference. I don't follow marching bands as closely as I used to but there was a time when UMass and North Texas were know for having 2 of the best marching bands, and overall music departments, in the country and I think that probably is still true today.

Yes, I've never been in a marching band, but I think we lose part of the game on TV by letting Herbstreit or some other douche bag say TOSU is better, pisses me off. I was friends of many from the 110 and know how much they work, so to see a ranking, that makes a band who pipes in music and uses singers (Lawrence Welk anyone?) pisses me off. I'm done.

I don't think the person that put together the countdown spent a lot of time finding video clips that best represent the bands, an uninspired exhibition at a high school band competition probably isn't the best look at UMass, here's a clip from their performance at Michigan a couple of years ago that gives a better look at what they can do.

Link.

I'm a 110 alumnus from 20 years ago. The guy who put this together had nothing to base his ranking on. Plus, OUr band is THE Most Exciting Band in the Land and will always be number one anyway!!

:).

Besides the fact that you can't really rank OUr band versus the others. It's like -- a show band versus corp band. Apples to oranges.

Agreed. He's probably a UMASS guy anyway. But, it's always fun to see other bands and how they compare. I'm from Milwaukee, WI so I've traveled to Northern Illinois a couple of times and thing they are not very good. Whenever a band plays with notes on their horns (as the 110 might say, "It ain't been good") they seem to lose credibility. I remember cheering on the 110 and their fans were hostile towards me and my friends. I still hate them. Go 110!!!!

On that UMass video, the band assembles  by just wandering out on the field and finding their spots?  Seriously?

When amateur hour is over, you get the 110.

its not an uncommon thing to do and with only a 5 minute window this is likely the 2nd half of their show so they're starting in the middle.

Isn't amateur hour when you start EVERY show in a block formation? just saying.

The problem is that this list judges the Marching 110 as a marching band and not as an international phenomenon and transcendent experience. We got a thumbs up from Jesus. Did any other MAC band get a thumbs up from Jesus?

I don't buy that at all.  That vid shows their band just running out..well, walking out...randomly.  Starting from a line-up formation on the sideline as the 110 does takes no particular time.  And it starts the performance in an organized way from the sideline instead of some random walk out thing that a bunch of elementary kids could do.

UMass band is good.

But they ain't O H I O.

Also, can we recognize that 'just saying' and 'wait for it' are dead and never had any currency.  What do those phrases mean.  Somebody align something cogent with them, around them for me, please, if you can.

of all the things to take a stand on, how a marching band takes the field might be the most irrelevant. It has zero bearing on the quality, real or perceived, of the performance and performers.

just saying. nuff said. get r done. who let the dogs out? raise the roof. leggo my eggo.

You gave 110% there--though I won't know for sure until I see the replay.  I wish the UMass band well in its future endeavors.  I'm just takin' 'em one post at a time.
