I expect this to be Grobe's last season at Wake.  They really sucked at BC last week and their only win is  against Presbyterian.  They might beat Army next week; they have similar styles so should play them well.  But the rest of the schedule is brutal -- Clemson, NCSt, Maryland, MiamiF, Syracuse, FSU, Duke & Vandy.  They'll be lucky to win four this year.

I have followed Wake living in the heart of the ACC Conference and his recruiting dropped off a few years ago.  I think his listening to some job offers caught up with him.  They have also lost their identity on offense.  They have a talented senior QB who is more of a pro-style QB but they are now putting the option back into their offense and they don't have the right supporting cast to run it.  Grobe had several OL who moved on to the NFL, but their line right now is probably average at best for MAC standards let alone the ACC.

Grobe is still very well respected by the Wake fans but most feel he is probably too loyal to make some changes with his staff and that is frustrating the base.

Grobe was 33-33-1 after 6 seasons at Ohio, he's 73-74 after 12 seasons at Wake. Safe to say Grobe is a .500 coach, no better, no worse.

I looked to see how Grobe stacked up to other WK coaches and was stunned by their coaching history. They've had 31 coaches in their history, 26 lasted 5 seasons or less, 10 only last a single season.

Grobe is 2nd in total wins with 73, 3rd place has 29 wins.

wow.

I would say that .500 is pretty outstanding for both Ohio and Wake.  Ohio only won 17 games the prior ten years.  Many of the facility improvements such as the lights and the Phillip's section is a direct result of Grobe moving the program forward (wins and graduation rate) enough to get Jody Galbraith Phillips to donate so much money.

Same thing at Wake, they were horrible and now the new coach will inherit much better facilities than Grobe found when he arrived at Wake.

The best fit for Grobe would have been at UVA (his alma mater) and running his Ohio offense with a QB who could have thrown the ball 16 to 20 times a game.  That player Marques Hagan's was at UVA and played well for Al Groh in his pro-style offense. Grobe would have been able to recruit a little easier at UVA than Wake.

Grobe interviewed informally for the UVA job a week before he took the Wake job and Welsh officially "retired" from UVA.
