I've never seen this before.  This paragraph was in the middle of the bobcat club e-newsletter today.  I've always thought our tailgating behavior was pretty good whether it be individual tailgates, big group events like 695's or club type tailgates like the Green and White Club.  Any idea what might be going on?

·        Responsible tailgating is encouraged around Peden Stadium. Please be mindful of Ohio’s state law per revised code 4301.62, open containers in public areas are prohibited.

While only a season ticket holder for seven years, and only attending a game or two a year, I have always erred on the side of caution regarding open container and poured any adult beverage into a cup.  I believe this is what is reflected in the e-mail: don't drink from the bottle or can and all is good.

remember, when the Feds lock the doors and turn on the lights  don't put your beer down. Classic freshman move, they'll pounce on you.

I guess the Athletic Dept knows we are the anchors of Tailgreat Park. They also know I have around 100 expected for our tailgate party this week. They have reason to believe the State Liquor Agents will be in Athens to make sure to enforce their archaic laws. We always use cups and never have anyone under 21 at our parties, so I'm not really that worried about it, but I did get a personal call today making sure I was aware of what is expected. All kidding aside, I hope everyone has a great time Saturday but doesn't cross the line and get in trouble.

Well then, frankly, may a large deer jump in front of their car(s) and cause them all manner of problems.

I always believed that the state liquor control agents spent an unbalanced amount of time in Athens vs. any other college town.

And the exact situation happened to me at a Court St. Bar. I was 20, my two friends were of age (barely). When the "Feds" showed up, my friends instinctually set their beers down. I chugged mine. They checked my friends' IDs, not mine...

I was told they were out in full force uptown last night...watch out on Saturday, I think it's going to be pretty intense scrutiny of the pregame tailgates.

I read this as students who are under should be mindful around tailgate areas, and those of us who aren't under 21 should just be sure to use common sense and use cups.  And maybe we shouldn't walk nearly to the gate with a half full Dixie cup this week.

This aside, this is a topic/subject that has rapidly changed in the last few seasons.  Tailgating has become so huge that it's occurring in parking areas that it never did before until the last two years.  It's a "price" of football success, and a good one in my opinion that we have a real gameday atmosphere around campus that didn't exist 5, 10 or more years ago.

Thank you for sharing this information. We are headed to the game from Dublin tomorrow morning. Didn't realize the scrutiny around alcohol and tailgating. We will certainly take extra precaution. I guess if you are responsible and not acting like a total idiot you won't have an X on you. Looking forward to a great game, great atmosphere and perhaps tailgating with some great Bobcat fans. I love coming to Athens for both football and basketball games and I have a lot of respect for both programs. I hope we can sell this game out and set a new attendance record tomorrow night!

Go Herd... or Go Terd and many of you have been saying this week.

This is good to hear. The only complaint I had when at OU (2006-2010) was that there was really no tailgating to speak of. We pregamed at our house with a grill and cornhole and then headed over to the stadium--and that was fun, but didn't quite live up to tailgating with thousands of other people.

Delaware has a great tailgating atmosphere, even though they are an FCS school. People show up four hours prior to kickoff and it's pretty much a free for all with alcohol. No stupid rules about using a solo cup. Police officers are very strict that there is no tailgating during the first two quarters of the game, but you can come back out after the game and tailgate for another two hours.

IMO, even though it was out of necessity, moving the student tailgate from behind the stadium to punchcard park was a great move. Much more visible. It actually looks like we have students that care now.

Also, students, why have you not filled one of the punchcard pits with ice and hidden a keg (or at least several cases) under there?

Such a joke that with all the state budget cuts, they still spend to enforce this...although I'm sure with all the fines it more than pays for itself.  Spend the money somewhere else...

It's really not much different than the idea that Ohio always employs far more Highway Patrol cars/officers on the freeways over "special" or Holiday weekends.  It's a money grab by the state, nothing more.  It's certainly not something to enforce safety, or protect citizens.

What's the policy for alcohol in solo cups at the student tailgate? I assume it's a no-no.

Definitely look forward to seeing how that's shaped out in person, since I still look like the photo on my student ID!

I'm assuming the policy is don't get caught and there isn't a problem. Of course that's been my personal policy since about 2001 or so. "Oh, hi Mr. S.A. This? Just a regular 20 ounce bottle of Pepsi. No, there definitely is not 4 shots of rum in it."
