0?
100?
500?
1000?

I just learned that the ticket office no longer allows students to pickup their free ticket prior to gameday. This means that if you are a student you're going to need to get their early. I think this one will turn away more students than NMSU last year.

None.  They let them in somehow.

They cram us on the hill. I barely got in during the NMSU game last year and my sister was turned away.

I can't speak for those who are still on campus or just recently left, but I see this as a big problem. You're losing fans, and even more importantly, potential future season ticket holders or donors once they graduate. Unless they turn out for the next game and show up early, which I doubt rarely happens. Optimist, Situation, whomever else that's more knowledgable than me, can you shed some light?

Limited seats means that those who are late miss the show. Maybe this is future incentive to plan ahead next time. I don't disagree with you that it hurts that these kids may not come back to a game if they get shut out, but what is Ohio supposed to do here? It sure is nice to be in an era where seating is at a premium and there is more demand than there are seats....nice problem to have.

I don't quite understand the reasoning behind this except....

There is assuredly a capped number of student tickets for each home game. Student A picks up a ticket prior to gameday, but arrives at Peden Stadium 15 minutes before kickoff and there's a huge line stretching all the way to Ping. The student gate runs out of tickets and has to turn people away. The line disburses, and Student A is led to believe that no one else can get into the game even though he has a ticket in hand. Therefore he, and everyone else who picked up a ticket earlier, goes home, and the student attendance has not truly reached capacity.

Last year following the NMSU game, there was a thread about the long lines at the student gate leading to people being turned away, and whether that was a good thing or bad thing. I agree that it is a good problem to have, and the person in that thread likened it the most popular nightclubs being the ones that meet capacity.

I agree that it's a nice problem to have, but I'm wondering if there is anything else the athletic department can do to lessen the blow (other than obvious: expansion). Why not let the students used any unsold/unused tickets that are general admission when the student allotment runs out?

Exactly how many of those do you expect? It would have to be unsold, and I doubt there will be any. You can't exactly figure out what seats are "unused" unless you have people flooding the ticket office saying they won't be using them. Then you have students with assigned seat tix that won't be sitting in those seats, overcrowding the student areas and irritating the fire marshal.

I think it might be time to eliminate GA in all areas but the hill.
Assign all other tickets in the stadium......
Require students to buy season tickets at $10 per game with a deadline of June 1st to purchase---even for incoming.
Do not make the family packs available until after student deadline......students are paying more.
Reconfigure family section based on student response........it may not even be available based on student participation.

I have always held the belief that no student should be turned away from the stadium.

I think they used to allow you to get them before the game, but you still could get them first-come, first-served at the gate. The easy way to fix this is to require getting them the day before, but then what do you do if you don't get rid of them all? Give them away at the gate? Now we have the same problem again.

I definitely don't support charging students, or packaging them as season packs at this point. We aren't at a level where that would work, and the students are paying plenty as-is. I think to package them up, demand has to be so high that they would be easy to get rid of, with lots of people who'd love to be there but can't get in, every week. Otherwise, Joe Blow is going to go home and you end up with tons of no-shows and empty seats that other students get turned away from.

I don't understand what you don't see about this "problem".

Allow students to get tickets before the game starting Monday... if they sell out, let everyone know so no one shows up thinking they can get a ticket... If they don't, let students come get theirs at the gate. If it sells out THEN, there is no excuse because they had all week to get theirs ahead of time.

Marshall does this and it works just fine... teaches the kids to get their tickets early and gives the Athletic Department an idea of how many tickets they need to offer students.

This really seems to me to be the easiest way to do this and why it's done any other way really doesn't make much sense.

I thought students could pick up tickets prior to game? Must be a new policy. After the great Miami-Ohio tickets debacle in basketball students were required to pick up tickets. That was the game in which so many students showed up for the basketball game that fans with tickets were turned away because the Convo was standing room only. After that happened student could pick up tickets for a Saturday game through Thursday and any remaining allotted student seats would then be put on sale to general public. I wonder when the policy changed?

How about having students who stay the entire game be able to get something that entitles them to priority seating for the next game?

They've done that for basketball, with the Portland game that began last season, where students had to come early to get a voucher, stay for the game, and then they could pick up the Sweet 16 glass...

I have some other ideas along these lines involving band only fans but it would not be polite of me to post them.  Besides, I respect tradition as much as the next guy.

The only problem I can see is students getting tickets in advance and then not showing up. Then students who actually want to go to the game can't. I doubt this happened very often, though.

If you charge students, then you risk losing the BIG FAT subsidy they pay. This will not happen.

That is exactly the reason and by some estimates as many as one-third of students with tickets haven't used them in some games.
