Arkley's twitter refers to seven true Freshmen that have played. I show six:
Troy Mangen - TE
Dyquan Stewart - Nickle
Casey Sayles - DE
Sebastian Smith - WR
Tarell Basham - DE
Durrell Wood - OG

But...who is the other? The participation report for Louisville showed OLB Quentin Poling played, but I doubt that he did. The participation report for Peay showed walkon Jerry WIlliams, a DT, played. That also seems unlikely. So, who is the other Freshman? One of these? Or someone else?

Hard to really count Smith as a true freshman since he had a medical redshirt last year - right. He at least has been here for a year so not a true freshman unless I'm missing something.

He actually is a burned redshirt. He was hurt before the school year started, so he elected not to enroll at all last year. Thus, he enrolled this year as a true Freshman.

My guess is that some of these players will still be eligible to be redshirted.  Isn't there a certain amount of playing time limit?  Or am I thinking of medical redshirt guidelines?

NVM on this thread, though. In his blog Arkley lists the same six above, so there isn't a seventh one.

Medical Redshirts are only granted after a redshirt year is awarded and after eligibility is exhausted.

I think (though this certainly could have changed) that you can play in any or all of the first 3 games of the season and still be redshirted. 

Anyone, am I correct?

If for some reason he is now injured, then whether or not he played against Louisville, he could get a Redshirt, but if that's not what Billy is thinking, he'll have to explain, because I have no idea.

I think both.

Mangen - You'd think he wouldn't have played this year without the injuries to Tanner and Henry
Stewart - He was here in the Spring, and was slated for play this fall even before injuries.
Basham - Like Stewart, was here in the Spring, and was slated to play.
S. Smith - Again, just good
Sayles - DE is not a position that has been hit by tons of injuries, so I'd say he's just good
Wood - He must be very good to be playing, even with all the injuries, but I'd say that without the injuries, he probably would still have redshirted.

What L.C. said....especially in regards to Sayles....watched him some Saturday.....looks like a helluva player....no idea why Nebraska didn't offer him.....their loss OUr gain.

they hope that these guys so much want to play there that they don't have to give them a schollie. Many in-state players would rather walk-on there than play elsewhere. It would be nice to have that going on with such high level talent .

The T. Scott I saw in Shreveport last year, was, I think, what they are trying to develop.  Scott could rush or drop into coverage and his long arms seemed to help with leverage.  In the bowl Scott seemed to have lots of freedom, as, before the snap he was moving around from a three point, a two point, tight, very wide, off the line. The ULM QB was the mouse and Scott was the cat.  Basham, I think, is like Scott while Sayles will be more of a physical challenge for the OT just too much to handle blowing up the pocket.  Sayles puts me in mind of Ernie Hodge as a freshman and if he can be like Jameson Hartke as a senior I will be most pleased.

Spot on Bcat in your comparison of Basham-Scott and Sayles-Hartke.....especially Sayles-Hartke.  If like my West Virginny relatives use to say  The  Good Lord Allows and the Creek Don't Rise we should have some prototypical bookend DE's for some time.

The reference to long arms reminds me of former Bobcat Rahim Slaise.  Although technically an outside linebacker in the Grobe / DeRuyter 3-4 defense, he knocked down a lot of passes coming off the edge with his 6'6" wingspan.
