Conference USA has announced Missouri State will join the league as a full member starting July 1, 2025.

Have to think this keeps WKU interested in staying south, though not a huge needle mover.

Possibly, but my first thought was the opposite, they are backfilling in anticipation of WKU's departure.

Will be interesting to see if they add anyone else. With this addition, here is the updated mileage for WKU travel:

Middle Tennessee: 96 miles
Jacksonville State: 285 miles
Kennesaw State: 286 miles
Missouri State: 447 miles
Liberty: 516 miles
Louisiana Tech: 578 miles
Delaware: 758 miles
Sam Houston State: 795 miles
Florida International: 972 miles
UTEP: 1,360 miles
New Mexico State: 1,406 miles

(LOL at Delaware deciding to join THIS league.)

When you have the chance to add a 4-7 FCS school you just have to do it.

A few MAC schools for comparison:
MOFO == 250 miles
OHIO -- 357 miles
BGSU -- 393 miles
UA -- 442 miles
WMU -- 465 miles
NIU -- 466 miles
CMU -- 546 miles
UB -- 642 miles
UMASS -- 1,024

Looks a little more compact to me, with UMASS maybe being the outlier.

Also wonder if this is going to make the MVC more vulnerable to further expansion. Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois or Illinois State would make lovely additions to the MAC in my opinion. I'd love to see UNI simply because a purple team that plays in a dome would be fun.

I think they (most teams) have a lot of work to do before joining the FBS - many schools aren't willing to take on that initial $5M cost, nor the continued costs of having to carry more scholarships every year.

From a facility stand-point, they removed the attendance requirement - but Illinois State's stadium for example only holds 13K.

Most weekends that's probably enough... :) ... BUT can they even get close to breaking even if on their best day the gate is barely covering the usher salaries?

It does seem to me that the number of teams moving up has been increasing the last 5 years or so. I’m not keeping count but there’s definitely been some growth in that area. And only 1? team in Idaho moving down. I doubt they’re chasing the money but rather some prestige in being in the top? level.

The expenses aren't that much less at FCS, but the revenue is a lot less. To have substantially less cost, you need to go down the Division 2 or 3. I'm not surprised at all that so many FCS schools want to move up to FBS. The fact that they have their own championship playoff doesn't seem to affect it.

I haven't been following it, but have any Division 2 or 3 teams moved up to FCS, or is FCS just shrinking?

The FBS is now slightly bigger in terms of participating football schools and it has usually been slightly smaller since the D1 split on the late 70's. So there have been slightly more move from FCS to FBS than from D2 to FCS. But there are about 60 move programs that are just "Division 1" in other sports that were in some other division, mostly NCAA Division 2, a quarter century ago. All of those schools with a football program are in the FCS. Well, I Kennesaw State didn't become D1 until aboyt 15 years ago and will be FBS in 2024 so that isn't exactly true. I think every other FBS school has been D1 since at least the mid-nineties. I'm pretty sure of that but I might not be thinking of one that wasn't.

According to the NCAA, it's about an even split for incoming and outgoing since 2022.

To FBS:
James Madison
Jacksonville State
Sam Houston State
Kennesaw State
Delaware
Missouri State

To FCS:
Texas A&M-Commerce
Lindenwood
Stonehill
West Georgia
Mercyhurst
Texas-Rio Grande Valley

One thing I found interesting is that some of the FCS conferences are on the brink of folding due to all the realignment. The A-SUN, Big South, MEAC, OVC and WAC have all been affected by the reshuffling of chairs.

The drive to move to DII and FCS, is to level the playing field. Schools like Frostburg got out of DIII to give actual scholarships because it was a level playing field, where DIII is not!

Stonehill and Lindenwood moved up to FCS because they both moved up to D1 for other sports, primarily hockey, and their new conferences insisted on football come along.
