As I understand relegation/promotion, the lowest ranked teams from among the top 80 would drop out, while the highest ranked of the excluded teams would replace them. Thus, if Ohio was in the top 80 at the end of one year, they would be included in the Super 80 league the next year, for at least one year. I would think that they would be sometimes in, sometimes not.
If you ain’t playing those teams how you going to ranked above any of them? And then you have the basketball problem of where society on a whole likes to think a .500 P5 team is just better than a 10 win MAC.
In England, at the end of the regular season the bottom three teams in the Premier (top) League are relegated to the Championship (second best league). The top three championship teams move up to Premier League. They don’t play inter league games against each other as part of the regular league seasons. If I’m not mistaken all levels of English soccer follow a similar pattern.
I get that, but HOW many teams are involved in that equation? Here there is roughly 80 and 80, how do you judge what the true bottom is and the true top is? Because it's not a true league set up. Just tossing ideas out there, I by NO means have the answer.

Then once it's record peaks and players graduate, it will return to a subpar record. That's pretty much the opposite of what relegation tries to achieve. English soccer players don't graduate every few years.
exactly Mike!!! In the Mid-Majors, a team (especially in today's world) may turn an 11-1 and lose 20 seniors, another 12 to the portal. How do they "earn" anything for the next year?

Relegation & Promotion systems reward sustained success, and punish schools that are consistently bad.

In English soccer, promoted teams receive a pretty big cash infusion for getting promoted, and typically their rosters improve year over year. I know in the EPL there's another massive cash infusion for clubs that stay in the Premier League for a certain number of years (I think it's 3 or 4).

Promotion/Relegation seems like a step in the right direction for mid-majors. Right now, their fate is basically predetermined by their conference affiliation, and it's exceptionally hard to break out of that. Systematized upward mobility seems much better than where things stand now.

I haven't read all the comments about this, but I think an 80-team "super league" would be the first step in weeding out the weak sisters in the "P" conferences. Ten or 15 years down the road the perennial top 20 teams would have little reason to keep schools that never vie for the current playoff, or an expanded playoff, in their club. Schools like BC, Rutgers, Indiana, Northwestern, and most of the current B12. The 80-team league could be chopped to 40, with no outside qualifiers. They'd likely have a 16-team playoff. Some network would pay huge money for the rights to a smaller, ccrem-de-la-creme league.

The 80-team proposal would eliminate G5 conferences because ten G5 teams would be sucked into the "super league" every year. G5s would be for to develop their own 50+-team second-class league, with the composition changing every few years based on which ten teams get an invite to the "super league."

The talk of the super league started as the NIL case with the NCAA was settling. NCAA proposed setting the value of NIL payments in a super division for 6 million. What is being said now is the P4 will go in on making that value 20-30 million and possibly owning the NIL rights of players in the process. At this number the G5 isn't going to get on that train and let the P4 take the hit. All this projected to take effect in fall of 2025.

We are still only in about the 3rd inning with NIL and what it means for universities like Ohio. The G5 I don't see combining with FCS conferences when most of the best of FCS has moved up.
