It's a bit strong to say it will literally die and be irrelevant, but I do think it will see a slow decline in popularity and slot back behind baseball and basketball.  The parents steering their kids away from football factor is a very real thing, and that has to hurt the pipeline long-term.  But particiation and fandom do not always go hand in hand (soccer being an example of that in the other direction) so football will survive.

A few thoughts on the MLS - one, I wholly disagree that it's "minor league" or that it's an inferior product.  It's just as professional, or entertaining as the NHL, or NBA.

That's just not true.  The NHL and NBA are the cream of the crop in their respective sports.   I am admittedly not a huge soccer fan but when DC United is good I'll watch.   I do love the World Cup however and always get the bug when it's going on but when I try to watch an MLS game afterwards the talent gap is pretty stark.  The play in the MLS is just so much slower than the play in the WC or the European premier leagues.  You can't say that about the NBA or NHL.

Did anyone watch the League of Denial documentary that aired on Frontline (PBS) last night?

If so, what were your thoughts?

I understand that it was showing one side of the conversation, but I still found it very compelling.

I did not really realize just how much the current version of the NFL was in jeopardy.  In my opinion, for what that is worth, they are in serious trouble.  Yet others are saying, like USA Today, that this will not change a thing.

I think football as a youth sport is certain to die a slow death.  Eventually, that will catch up and seriously degrade the HS and college game.  The NFL will find a way to survive simply because they don't need thousands of players like the NCAA does and the spectacle of it will become even more appealing due to the risk and rarity (think Rome and the Coliseum).

You have to ask yourself as a college AD or President, will I invest millions of dollars in this sport and facilities it requires on the hope that they figure out a way to make this game safe?

Billions of dollars are already invested in it, by Universities, by Media, and by Small businesses.

Is anyone really shorting the NFL right now?

I feel like that bet might not be worth it.
