It pretty well documented that Beau up the middle for 2 yards is Tim Albin's favorite play call. Of Beau's 86 rushing attempts this year, he has 45 carries that resulted in gains of 2 yards or less. His average might be 3.7 yards, but the median is closer to 2 yards. Basically, there is a statistical probability that each time Beau touches the ball, he will gain around 2 yards. Would the running game be any worse at gaining yards and controlling the time of possession if Boykin was getting more touches early in the game when Ohio is establishing the line of scrimmage? He seems to get the extra yard or two when running between the tackles that Beau is not getting.

I do not think Beau is problem...you should probably start with the predictability of a first down run (on the coaches) and the five guys in front of Beau blocking (the O-line).   I'll say it again we need MORE, bigger and stronger players on both sides of the ball.  We were manhandled by CMU up front.

71, please see below.

Per Arkley

On first down, Ohio called pass plays 16 times and running plays 18 times. On first down throws, Ohio finished 11 of 15, with one sack, for 150 yards and two touchdowns. On first down runs, the Bobcats averaged 3.9 yards per carry and had runs of four yards or more eight times.

So, your saying that 14 times we had runs of less than four yards on first down.  But kept going to that well.

Also, an average in this situation is kind of useless since a couple decent runs would mask a load of poor efforts.

Last Ohio drives final running plays; 5, 5, 6, 9, 1 for the TD.  I just wish the OL had been given the chance to show they had worn Central down.  I believe Boykin or Beau and the boys would have killed the clock. Again, sorry if they let you down.

No, Monroe. Here is the breakdown:
Pass Plays - 11 completions, 2 TD, 4 times lead to 2d and 10, 1 time lead to 2d and >10
Running Plays - 8x times >4 yards, 10 times <4 yards

It looks like a reasonable mix to me. Yes, the runs did get stopped 10 times, but they also set up two TD passes, and the pass plays also resulted in 5 long yardage situations.

Exactly, which is why I was more interested in the median instead of the mean.  The median result is 2 yards.  The play call is largely ineffective and puts the team in 2nd and 8 too often.  Boykin seems to run more north and south, which is why he isn't getting stopped for little to no gain.  If the play call is going to be between the tackles, then use the guy that does it more effectively.

It seemed like Beau was having success early running on the edge, which makes sense since he is a quicker back. I don't know. It's just frustrating. Is it the O line? Maybe, but if all it takes to stop our ground game is plug the middle (since we don't get any push) and keep the back side end at home (since T2 says he is making the read and that's why he isn't keeping it), then maybe we ought to try something else. Is it personnel groupings? Why not substitute RBs for the situation (three yards and less to go, put Boykin in)?

I noticed several times Saturday on Beau-up-the-middle we had 2 lineman blocking 8 yards down the field while the rest of the line, defense, and RB are piled up 1 yard down the field. I get why we want to create a running lane beyond the first level, but why block at the second level if we consistently can't get there?

I don't have any good answers at this point. This loss has to be on the coaches, though. I'm not ready to fire anybody, but I would like to see someone step forward and take responsibility. You can't fix a problem until you admit there is a problem.

If 8 plays were for over 4 yards, and 10 were for under 4, it surprises me if the median was as low as 2.

That number is for the entire season.  More than half of his rushing attempts this year have gone for 2 yards or less (45 of 86).  I didn't do the exact calculation, but the median has to be 2 or less if more than 50% of the attempts are that number.

We are averaging .6 yards less per rush this year than last (4.4 vs. 3.8) according to stats at ohiobobcats.com. I suspect that the marginal difference is huge in its effect.

Guess which team ran for 208 and which ran for 107 on Saturday.

Guess which team hasn't had a back run for over 100 yards in a game this year.

We must have been watching different games if it looked like we were going to win that game on Saturday for anything but a few moments.

Bcat2, maybe I should have been more precise and talked about an effective way to move the ball...let's see 15 pass attempts yielded 150 yards or 10 yards per pass.  Those rushes yielded a 3.9 average per carry?  I think I'd pass more and run less on first down.  That's my point.  The even bigger point is this O-line is NOT as good as last years right now.
