I had a conversation this morning with one of my best friends, who is a Marshall grad.  He pointed out that the MAC crew that worked the OU/Marshall game this year made what he expected to be the worst calls of the season.  Twice in that game, the referee called illegal motion penalties on the defense.  Not once, but twice! (one on each team).  He then admitted that last night's crew was even worse than the Herd/Cats game in Athens.

Out of morbid curiosity, I went back and looked at the official box score for that game.  Guess who the referee was?  Tom McCabe, the same guy that presided last night over the phantom offensive pass interference call on Matt Waters, the non-fumble fumble on Matt Waters and the NCAA Top 5 Worst Call of All Time safety on the 4 yard line.

I just refuse to believe that this is a coincidence.  These are egregious errors.  Forget the outcome of the game, it is a national embarrassment for the MAC to trot this crew out for any other game.  They should be relieved of their duties now.   If they're under contract for the season, the rest of their games should be in Kalamazoo, Ypsilanti or Oxford.  They cannot be trusted to competently run a game involving any results that actually matter.

BG vs UB at Bills Stadium should get more TV views than holiday game from empty Peden in Athens vs. IAA UMASS. The instant replay was clear as can be on the fumble and safety.  Not to mention the call against Waters which would have set up another 7 for the Cats.  Those were all "game changing" plays altered by officiating and confirmed by replay.  Our D played great in the first half.  Would have shut them out if not for the non-fumble.  The "O" was moving the ball before the fumble.  But somethings are just too much to over come.  I don't like to see a team give up.  However, those calls were difficult to watch the first time.  Instant reply should have corrected the situation.  As Ray Bentley said; they had the power to fix the safety.  The grounding play would have only been a repeat of down.  Still plenty of time.  Its enough to make one lose faith in the game.  Buffalo is a decent team we should have went into half with a double digit lead and the ball to start the second half.

Safety from the four yard line???  Too many big play - game changing alterations to be just poor officiating.  Who is running the replay booth?  IMHO - The integrity of the game takes yet another hit.

I agree. And this is not "sour grapes" talking. The calls against Buffalo were horrendous as well. Specifically the late hit out of bounds on TT and the offensive PA calls.

My question to the MAC: When you have the first nationally televised conference game of the season on ESPN2, is THIS the best officiating crew you want to showcase?

Let's not forget the play where Davis essentially carried Oliver for 15 yards.   I'm no ref, but that can't be legal.

I agree. I was screaming at the TV when that happened last night and the play-by-play guy was yucking it up over it. As I understand it, it's illegal and should have been flagged.

"Tom McCabe and Penn Wagers walk into a bar."

That's all you need for the joke.
