This game should also be the healthiest our OL has been all season (save Louisville).  I'm excited to see what we can do with Lechner, Prior, and Johnson all back in the lineup.

As for who's more talented, I think that comes down to your definition.  Buffalo has the high end talent in players like Mack Oliver and Nuetz, but Ohio is a much deeper team at nearly every position.

Just my opinion but:
  • Ohio has the advantage at 3 spots (QB, OL, DB)
  • Buffalo a clear advantage at 2 spots (RB and LB)
  • I'd call Recievers, and DL a push.  Nuetz would be our #1 I think, but I'd take Foster Cochrane and the crew over everyone else.   Their DL seem to stop the run better, while we get after the QB better.
  • I Dont know much about their special teams to rate.

I think it will be a good game and come down to those unpredictable items, specifically turnovers, and the special teams ability to change field position.  To me, this feels a lot like the build-up to our games with Temple in the past.

That's a good way to look at it. That's close to how I feel as well. When I was referring to Buffalo being more talented, I meant top-end talent but didn't specify.

Interesting analysis, but that's not the way that football works (and we all know this, I'm not trying to insult intelligence). It's not like basketball where centers match up, point guards, etc. The D-Lines being a push means nothing, it's how does that D-Line fare against the other O-Line. The QB against the secondary and the rush, receivers against the DB's. That would be the interesting match up to hear. If the receivers are a push, does that mean they both match up evenly with the opposing DBs?

This was more an analysis of the "who's more talented" that was being discussed earlier, not to predict the outcome of this particular game.

I want to pre-register my complaints:  Run Tim TheLoad Edmond.  And run some two back sets.

Buffalo is very good at run defense, Way, Mack and others.  I know Albin will need to keep them honest with enough running to keep the box loaded against it.  If the OL can then protect TT through at least three reads Mr. Waters and Mr. Dovell should have big days.

Buffalo is a solid team, but while they're blowing teams out, they haven't beaten any teams with winning records yet.

In fact, the computers say that three teams Ohio has beaten, North Texas (6-2), Marshall (5-3), and Akron (3-7), are all better than any of the teams Buffalo has beaten.  Their best win is over 2-8 Kent.

their schedule is rated by Sagarin as 147, ours is 138. We lost to a lower ranked team, have been unable to stop any good back as far as I can tell, and have trouble running the ball well. We will have our hands full against a good running back and a pretty good run defense. We played well enough to beat 2 pretty good teams. Who knows which Ohio team shows up in this game. We tend to sleepwalk for periods of time. We better not do that against Buffalo or this one is history.

Keys:  senior leadership and star play out of a few of the underclasspersons.

My hunch on who brings heat for us:  Sayles.

The overall schedule ratings are similar but there's an important difference -- in Buffalo's case, there is a huge gap between the teams they've lost to (Ohio State and Baylor) and the teams they've beaten (the best is Kent, second best is probably Stony Brook and UB needed four OTs to win that one).  Ohio on the other hand has played a lot more good-but-not-great teams.

I do, though, definitely agree with your last sentence.  Ohio can't expect to win without their A game.

Line opens a bit smaller than I expected, with Buffalo favored by 2.5-3 points.

Edit - you beat me...lol

Sayles is a good pick on defense.
Last time Daz stepped up.  This time I like Mangen, though, a lot of his work won't show on a stat sheet.  If he plays the game Tyler Knight played in Shreveport I will forget about my issue with burning his redshirt.

Anyone know about the extent of Daz's injury last week?  It didn't look too serious, but I don't recall hearing any official or even unofficial reports.

do you think they really had any choice on this? We had no TEs with all the injuries.

Heading north tomorrow PM so here's my prediction:

Through four MAC games Buffalo has allowed 38 points; that number will be more than doubled after Tuesday evening.

Go Bobcats beat the Boyz in blue.

I hope I am wrong, but I think we are lucky to score 20. I just don't think we match up with this team very well.

them
Colobobcat66.  You are absolutely correct that it was necessary for Mr. Mangen to play.  Also this is the year, with the seniors of football season 2013, to sell out to win.  So many outstanding seniors, this might be Ohio's best shot at a MACC since 1968.  It is just one of my beliefs that, for the player's sake, redshirting gives them their best shot. No doubt Mr. Mangen was/is ready and up to the challenge.   Tough break is all that Knight, Tanner, Talbert, Hill, Henry and Asher were not enough at TE for Mangen to redshirt. I also believe Mr. Mangen arrived fully intending to take Troy Hills job if he could. So please don't make too much of my issue.  I did not intend it to be a shot at the program.

Like your confidence.  The OL is getting well, though, this might be their first game with all the #1s since game one.  If they can continue to mend and jell their best games are down the road.

Mr. Sayles might need to play both ways.  something tells me he could stop Mr. Mack in his tracks.

This game in my opinion comes down to the running game. Can we get one going? Can we stop Buffalo and make them one dimensional. The front four has to stay disciplined and everyone else has to tackle.

I agree - this game will be a game that will be won or lost in the trenches. Ohio's defensive line is much, much improved from the Louisville game. Ohio's first string offensive line is finally back. Those two facts give me reason to think Ohio can win this.

Point spread continues to increase. Buffalo is now a 3.5-4 point favorite.

Thanks for the update. Disappointed to see Johnson listed as Out. Was really hoping to have him for this game. Hate tosee Daz already ruled out too.

Every team says they have a guy who can run over Mack, yet nobody has been able to do it. If Solich is smart he won't take that gamble and instead do what Baylor did. Get the ball out to the receivers immediately and take advantage of our small secondary.

It should hopefully be a decent atmosphere in WNY. The university has been pushing this game pretty hard.
