You can tell that our hope for the football team has fallen and we have now transferred alot of the hope and passion to basketball.  Basketball board has really picked up especially after a solid victory and an impending game against tOSU.  Not so much going on over here even with a pretty important game tomorrow against BG, though not as important as it once was.  Personally I am hoping we get a nice bounce back win and the passion level for both boards will be back up to about equal.  But it does make sense since this year was a MAC title or bust kind of year and the chances of making that MACC game are significantly hampered now.

I'll still show up for our last two home games, but I was deflated after the CMU game and gave up any chance of the season being stellar after the Buffalo game.  We went from controlling our destiny to a bunch of what-ifs about the tiebreaker.  I have seen nothing this season to make me believe it is going to finish any way other than disappointing.

I am sure the Seniors are more disappointed than any of the fans, but I really felt that we could have a magical year this year.  Maybe I expected too much, but it still feels like this class leaving town without a conference championship is a bit of an underacheivement.  They accomplished nearly every other goal in their four years.

It was last year that I expected the championship, but the freaky level of injuries took them out of the running. That team had all the pieces, enough to beat Penn State at Penn State. Last year there was a strong Senior class, and a strong Junior class behind them, meaning a veteran team across the board, and when they were healthy, they could be very good, as Penn State and Louisiana-Monroe found out.

This year there is a strong Senior class, but a pretty light Junior classs, so that means a lot of Freshmen and Sophomores playing. The next window of opportunity for a championship, in my opinion, will be 2015 and 2016, when these Freshmen and Sophomore are Juniors and Seniors.

If:
1. We beat BG tomorrow
2. Toledo beats Buffalo tomorrow
3. BG beats Buffalo on 11/29
4. Everything else goes like it should

We win the MAC East based on a better division record than Buffalo (since Buffalo plays one fewer MAC East game) and the head-to-head over BG.

So, no, I'm not moving on just yet. Go Bobcats.

Plus, if we win out, we're probably guaranteed a bowl game, no matter what else happens.  I'll take that, too.  We need help to win the division, but pretty much control our own bowl destiny.  Go Cats!  Beat BG!  Then let the chips fall where they may.

The Toledo/Buffalo game presents an interesting catch-22.

If we beat BGSU, we'll want Toledo to win so that we still have a shot at the MAC East title.

However, if we lose to BGSU, we'll want Buffalo to win and give Toledo another loss. Toledo is currently 6-3 with a game vs. NIU remaining. If they lose to Buffalo and NIU, they'd finish at 7-5 and presumably behind us in line for a bowl (assuming we're at 8-4 with wins over Kent and UMass).

In the bowl picture, these teams are absolute locks:
NIU
Ball State
Buffalo

Leaving it up to these 3 likely fighting it out for 2 spots:
BGSU
Toledo
Ohio

With a loss tomorrow, we need Toledo to drop to 7-5 and it would also be great to have NIU make it to the BCS. Even 5 teams in bowls might be iffy this season.

If our team comes out tonight and gets a win on the road that will restore my excitement and belief that they still have fire in their bellies and want to go out as winners.  All will be forgotten in my book.

However if we lose and still win our last two at home I will be OK with an 8-4 record but will be left thinking "how much longer until we can win a MACC?".

The opportunity is there for the team tonight to make a statement that they are still hungry.  Will they take advantage of it?

I wouldn't call Buffalo an absolute lock.  They're 7-2 but they have Toledo & BG still on their schedule, so they could drop to 8-4 and maybe not be in the mix, depending on how many AQ teams get bowl eligible.  They're in the same boat as Ohio & BG: they have to win the East to lock up a bowl bid.  The only locks in the MAC right now are NIU & BSU.

No absolute lock, but Buffalo's only losses so far are to the #3 and #5 ranked teams in the BCS.

I waited until today's two games were done to answer this one.  Without any doubt, I'm moving on.  It's 100% basketball season.  See ya next fall Peden.  See you soon and often Convo.
