I had a dream.

I had a dream that just more than a year ago, we were undefeated....
and ranked...
and featured in Sports Illustrated...
and being called a "BCS Buster"...
and had the best passer in school history...
and had a running back setting a single-season rushing record...
and were being called "the next Boise State"...

(pause for effect)

Yet I look up and see this program has lost six of its last 10 MAC games without even playing BSU, Toledo, or NIU this year (but get ready next week to make that 7 of 11), is perhaps not going bowling even with an 8-4 finish, is going to finish third in its own division, is about to lose a class of record-setting seniors, and is continuing its 45-year streak of not winning this middling conference.

(another pause)

Yeah, must have just imagined that. Damn. For a minute, I thought this program was going to be relevant.

Feels like many moons ago. Sad what's happened since. Injuries, repeated bad playcalling, terrible special teams.

I keep telling myself "two bowl Ws in a row with a chance for a 3rd" but that hasn't been helping recently.

The downfall is partially due to the improvement of the MAC over the last 2 years. Poor play calling and adjustments have caught up to us in MAC play.

The MAC hasn't improved.  We have six of the worst teams in the country.  Only three teams in the MAC are actual good teams -- NIU, BSU & Toledo.  BGSUcks has beaten a VERY poor Tulsa team, lost to Indiana and Miss St (mediocre AQ teams) and to Toledo.  Their wins are all over dregs (and we're playing like dregs).  Buffalo's the same: they beat UConn (the Fiami of the AAC) and the dregs of the MAC.  Ohio has simply become a lousy team.  We've simply lost the fire.

I agree . . . we've lost the fire in the belly.  I'm not sure where it went or how to get it back, but it's gone.  Hope it will return for these last two games or we are in a heap of trouble.  A loss to either Kent or UMass would be, in a word, "Unacceptable"!

Yes I was at one time an adviser to Chuck Landon.  True story.

I disagree. The conference is as nationally competitive as ever among the bowl eligible teams. Ohio has a 6-4 record but where the team is at right now is no different than Akron or Central Michigan. We're not in the mid tier of the MAC. The school the way its playing is in the bottom tier. The school makes a bowl game or its time for Frank Solich to hit the road.

Whether or not they make a bowl this year should be irrelevant. There is no excuse for this team to not be playing for a MAC title, which should mean far more than being a team to fill out a slot.

It's been two years without a division title.

Not ready to fire him, but the heat in the room should be rising. These last two Novembers have been nothing short of embarrassing.

There is a hell of an excuse - we have very average talent.  We are by no means nearly as talented as BG, Northern Illinois, Ball State, Toledo, Buffalo…and perhaps even Kent.  Our 2010 recruiting class, if you remember, was almost a complete loss and we're feeling the effects today.  Our O and D lines are undersized, slow and not nearly as strong as better teams in the MAC.  Sad but true.

That bolded statement takes the cake for me. A sub .500 record against teams that aren't in the top tier of the conference.

How in the heck did this team beat North Texas (now 7-3) and Marshall (now 6-3)? Is it injuries again? Did Ohio just sneak up on those teams early in the year? The train has completely come off the tracks. SOMEONE...ANYONE...needs to get them back on.
