The band from one of the area high schools played in front of the Statehouse during lunch today.  Didn't pay much attention to them because they had a lot of the usual stuff high school bands play over there.  And when I heard O$U's fight song, I really tuned out.

Then I heard "Stand Up and Cheer."  I went to my window and watched.  Doing all the Ohio college fight songs, I thought.

Then they played what appeared to be their alma mater.

Then they played "Stand Up and Cheer" again.  And they played it as they marched back to their buses.  It must be their fight song, too.

Good school.

After reading your post...it got me thinking and I remembered a high school local to Dayton that uses Stand Up and Cheer because I remember hearing it this past year during a football Friday night (I work the games as part of the teams Medical/Athletic training)...

After some quick research.....I found out that a local Dayton team does use the song and they are in my local high school's conference.....Oakwood....home of the fighting LumberJacks!!!

I guess Westlake Ohio and Middleburg Ohio use it as well.  Here is the link to the Wiki page that lists all known schools that use Stand Up and Cheer!!!!

In my area, "Stand Up and Cheer" is used by, Galion, Buckeye Central and Bellevue high schools.

According to a Dispatch story, Columbus-area schools that use it as their fight song are Canal Winchester, Delaware, Lancaster, Worthington and Upper Arlington.

Wikipedia says the song also is used by Westlake, Oakwood, Midpark, Westerville South and New Lexington high schools in Ohio, and many others in other states. Also quite a few colleges use the song.

I moved up to Toledo about a year and a half ago and began following the school district's high school football team I moved into. I was surprised to see that the school's colors are green and white and their fight song is "Stand Up and Cheer". Furthermore, while Ottawa Hill's mascot is the Green Bears, the giant flag that is brought out onto the field with the team to start the game and after each score is green with a giant white paw print. Coincidence? I think not.

My high school's marching band played "Buckeye Battle Cry" and "Across the Field" in its pregame. Our colors are also scarlet and grey....

So I guess my question is this: Did these high schools use the song because it was OHIO's fight song, or is it just a coincidence? I noticed on the Wikipedia page that many of the schools that use it are in Ohio and surrounding states. It would be cool if they were actually copying OUr tradition. I know we weren't the first to use the song, but did we inspire local high schools?

Many schools, especially in Central and SE OHIO, have band directors from OHIO University so they logically carry on the tradition. New Lexington High School, Crooksville High and Maysville (South Zanesville) all have OHIO traditions. I'm sure there are many more. It seems like every year at homecoming there are bands doing the OHIO march on Union and Court.

I had the chance to see the Bellevue band (they were playing my nephew's school Ontario) a couple of weeks ago.  They were excellent - like a miniature version of the 110.  They

My high school (Thomas Worthington) had the same fight song too.  It is NOT because it is Ohio's fight song, it was just a popular fight song picked up by many bands many decades ago, particularly in the Midwest.  I think I heard "On Wisconin" is the most commonly used fight song in the country.

My high school, Upper Arlington (in suburban Columbus), has "Stand Up And Cheer" as its fight song; it's the exact same tempo and style as OUr band, because I think either the WKU or Montana State version has a different rhythm...
