It's sad to see that starting with the 2014 football season that the Rose Bowl merely becomes a play-off semifinal game instead of the Granddaddy of the Bowls as it's long been known.  The pagaentry and grandeur of the game is unsurpassed IMHO and I hate seeing it lose it's luster as such.  Dennis Dodd of CBSSports has a good article today on the subject worth reading.  I'm all for the play-off season but hate seeing the Rose Bowl become a casualty.  All in the name of progress I guess.

It went from being an exclusive playground of the PAC 10/12 and Big 10/infinity to being an exclusive playground of the BCS to now being another exclusive playground. I guess I can see why a fan of the affected conferences might care, but I really don't.

I've been watching the Rose Bowl since 1968.  I'll miss the traditional place of the Rose Bowl in the college football landscape.

I heard the comment yesterday about the Rose Bowl being one of the football play-off semifinal games.

Does anyone know if the Rose Bowl will host a semifinal game every year or if they'll rotate quarter final/semi final games ?

It's a four-team playoff, so there are no quarterfinals. With the rotation, I believe the Rose Bowl will host a semifinal once every three years.

As of now, it's one of the rotating semifinal sites.

This reminds me of the book "Death to the BCS" where the authors (Yahoo sports writers) argue the Rose Bowl should host the NCG every year, compared to the other BCS bowls (cases being the Fiesta CEO was jailed for fraud, the Sugar being able to stay relevant with the best SEC team not in the playoff, and the Orange simply not having that grand a setting). Places like the Cotton Bowl & Peach Bowl would be worthy semifinal sites, but I'm disheartened by the fact that Jerry World of all places will host the NCG next year

I still think it will be the marquee bowl game in the years it doesn't host the semis.   It's still going to maintain the PAC/B1G tie-ins, so in most years, you'll still get 1 of the top 2 teams from each conference.  It'll still be on New Year's Day as well.  Not sure it loses all that much if its luster, IMO.

I just don't get why they're so intent on keeping the PAC/B1G tie-in. One of, if not the best Rose Bowl ever, let alone college football games ever, was USC/Texas before the 5th game was added. Tradition is great for college football, but not at the expense of great games.

The Rose Bowl would be better if we just banned the word "pageantry".

That was the title game, played in the Rose Bowl, but wasn't the actual Rose Bowl game.  Still was a great game though.

The 2006 Rose Bowl Game was THE national championship game as determined by the BCS rotation Ozcat, just to clarify. It was both the BG & NCG

Because of the conferences they represent, the Sugar and Rose have separated themselves. They will remain relevant.

That's funny. Last night during the Sugar Bowl, they had a montage of great moments in that bowl's history. They showed Terrelle Pryor and I laughed.

I was thinking this same thing while watching the game.  Why not make the National Championship at the Rose Bowl every year on New Years Day?  That would retain the tradition of really the only bowl people seem to care about anymore.

If I remember correctly wasn't this the Rose Bowls choice to not be included?

Just like several years ago the AP poll asked to not be included in the BSC formula..
