Ohio's ESPN coverage has increased enormously since Frank Solich has arrived. Few realize that Ohio's TV coverage on ESPN is better than the average BCS school. Ohio had more games on ESPN, ESPNU, ESPN News in 2013 than every school in the ACC except Miami FL (Both had 5 appearances). Had Ohio played better and finished business in the MAC they could of had the BG and MAC Championship games making for 7 total appearances. This program overall isn't too different than the rank and file ACC football program these days. Our recruiting class in state is about even with Pitt and ahead of some ACC schools.

Convenient to leave out ABC in the espn family of networks...redo that with ABC and the #'s are much different...sure we have more exposure but a lot of that is because the MAC has agreed to help espn create programming by playing on tuesday, wednesday,thursdays on espnU

I'd like to see the comparison in ratings for these games as well. Exposure on ESPN doesn't mean squat if hardly anyone is watching.

With all due respect, this is an obnoxious statement.  If we played in the ACC we would be lucky to win a game.  In a good year maybe we could win 2.  The budget that schools in the ACC work with trumps our by a large margin.  We can't even win the MAC, and you are suggesting that we would be middle of the pack in the ACC?

I agree with your point that Ohio as it stands as a MAC team would not fare well competing versus ACC teams. It's sort of a circular argument, though. IF Ohio was in the ACC, Ohio would have more revenue, and would have a bigger budget, and IF Ohio was in the ACC, Ohio would probably be able to recruit better players, so you'd expect that Ohio would improve, and it's hard to know how many games Ohio might win.

When reality meets theory, though, sometimes strange things happen. Temple improved from one of the worst teams in America to a decent team when they moved from the Big East to the MAC, and now that they are back in what is left of the Big East, they seem to be getting worse again.

Agreed. I just think it's hasty to jump to conclusions about more exposure than some ACC schools. The number of eyeballs watching 5 MACtion games could be a lot less than the number of eyeballs watching 3 ACCtion games. You see what I did there?

Ohio - Buffalo 0.4
BG - Miami 0.1
CMU - BSU 0.4
Buffalo - Toledo 0.1
BSU - NIU 0.7
Miami - Kent 0.1
Kent - Ohio 0.3
Buffalo - Miami 0.1
BG - Buffalo 0.1
NIU - Toledo 0.7
WMU - NIU 0.6
BG - NIU 1.2

So Ohio's highest rated game was the 5th highest rated MAC game this season. NIU is the big draw, clearly. Also worth noting that Ohio-Marshall pulled a 0.1, Ohio-Louisville pulled a 1.2, and Ohio-ECU pulled a 0.9. The ECU game was the second lowest rated bowl game, behind the Heart of Dallas Bowl, which went up against 3 New Years Day bowl games involving Big Ten and SEC teams.

Considering Ohio ECU was on a freaking Monday afternoon when many people were still in the office, .9 is not bad.

Ohio and Marshall were on ESPNNews, the lowest rated ESPN channel, while still competing against large prime-time matchups including the obnoxious 800-lb gorilla up the road, who was taking on Cal. 

Ohio Louisville involved a Heisman candidate and was the only show in town that day. If we had bothered to show up for any of our TV games, our ratings might have been better as the year went on.

I like watching ESPN.

I like watching the Bobcats.

When the two combine -- FIVE TIMES THIS YEAR -- that is a tremendous accomplishment, regardless of ratings.

I want everyone to take a moment and soak that stat in -- OHIO FOOTBALL WAS ON ESPN FIVE TIMES THIS YEAR.

If I had predicted on this message board in 1994 that Ohio would be on ESPN five times in one season, you all would have thought I had gotten my degree at Marshall.

Not this year and maybe not last, but in the few years before that, we were on ESPN a lot and won a lot of. That was prominent and a whole lot of fun.  And 'good for the program.'

It would come as a surprise to most but that is the full ABC, ESPN list for the ACC. What's happened is the SEC and Big Ten have pushed the ACC to marginal timeslots that the ACC is accepting because of the big money attached to the contract. I am even going to attempt to make an arguement that Ohio's exposure is more valuable than what FSU, Clemson, GT, VT, UNC, Miami receive attention but it stacks up nicely compared to second division ACC schools. If Ohio was in the ACC it would be squarely in the second division and receiving less exposure on ESPN which its picking up as one of the better MAC programs. Life is not so bad.

I question whether our recruiting would be much different in the ACC. I look at the recruiting rankings and see Pitt taking the same level of players in Ohio that Ohio is doing now. The difference would be Ohio finishing 4-8 or 3-9 every season instead of 8-4 or 9-3. The BCS buster era has blurred recruiting lines to the point where the conference you play in no longer holds you back. It can help you in the case of the SEC but playing in the ACC is nothing to get excited about. This is my core point; we have a good situation in the MAC.

Finally the biggest point, what is the best thing that the Ohio program offers? We are never going to be able to bowl over recruits with facilities like Oregon. There is no way its happening. The IPF and APC can be more impressive out on the Basketball or Volleyball recruiting trail because there you are recruiting against all of Division 1. Schools like St. Bonaventure or St. Peter's that have nothing to offer so comparatively we look pretty good. Not against the top tier football schools though. We don't have SEC or Big Ten schedule to offer either. The number 1 aspect this program has going for it is a high level of ESPN exposure over an extended period of years. That exposure places Ohio a cut above your average run of the mill FBS program.
