Expected to be named YSU president on Friday.  Akron goes for Toledo's Scott Scarborough.

Optimist's head implodes.  Our school is saved from the Vest's incredible fundraising and leadership capabilities.

Are they going to convert to for-Profit, then?

Once I made you rich enough
Rich enough to forget my name
And Youngstown
And Youngstown
My sweet Penguin I'm sinkin' down
Here darlin' in Youngstown

I was thinking the same thing.  Could Tressel have been a huge diversion to take peoples eyes off of Scarborough, who actually might be an even worse choice than the vest.  Let's see.  Previous President spends like a drunken sailor and bails out just as university heads off the financial cliff.  Trustees bring in President who is widely condemned for trying to turn public universities into for-profit diploma mills.  Financial maelstrom hits, and university says that the only way to stay afloat financially is turn the place into a for-profit diploma mill.

It's like Lenin said, man.  You have to ask yourself, "who benefits?"

Hey, didn't Steve Buschemi once live in Athens?

I friend of mine thought he saw him walking down Walker on the West side and go into a house (around '94).  The next day there was an article in the paper about how he was in town and had family in the area.  My friend then became convinced that it was definitely Buschemi that he saw.

It is not debatable that I was wrong in my call that Tressel was going to be Akron President.

However, I can assure you my head has not exploded.

While growing up and still maintaining residence in the greater Akron area makes me interested in the general happenings at Kron, I promise I do not care what the outcome is for Zippy beyond how it impacts OHIO. That is "our" school to me. Would Tressel to Kron have been good for OHIO? Not sure... Is Akron success good for Ohio? Probably to some point. Unlike many on this board, I feel Akron is on the rise in the MAC and it is worthwhile that we maintain some relations with them as compared to other MAC programs who are a waste of time.

Sidebar: I still think Akron presidency was choice #1 for Tressel. Only think he takes YSU after learning Akron denial. I cannot prove this and obviously he would never admit to it.

I saw reports that Tressel was offered both jobs and took YSU over Akron. Anyone else see that?

From Football Scoop:

Youngstown State: Youngstown State has named Jim Tressel their new president. The board of trustees unanimously voted Tressel in this morning. Per source, Tressel was also offered the same position at Akron but chose to accept the position at Youngstown.

So perhaps 'Kron was who got REJECTED?

The most recent report is that he was offered YSU first and asked Akron to withdraw his name.  Perhaps he saw that the tide was turning against him at Akron.

Until Football Scoop names their source OR Akron confirms that story, I'm going to have to assume that the "source" was Tressel or someone close to him (Agent), and that its untrue

WFMJ in Youngstown says he withdrew from Akron before the trustees there met on Thursday.

It seems screwy that he would drop out of the Akron search... even if YSU offered him first, Akron would match or beat anything YSU offered.  Knowing that they were deliberating at the same time yesterday, why pull out?

The only thing I can guess is there was a little more resistance to his qualifications at Akron, whereas they think he's a god in Youngstown, so he went where he would basically be given carte blanche.

These are not secret ballots - he was told and knew he would not get the votes - so he bailed to Youngstown.
