Jim Tressel today was the third UA presidential finalist to present to faculty, board members and the community. According to the ABJ, he said the university spends too much on athletics.  Was quoted as saying something like, "If I am the university's athletic director, I wouldn't want someone like me to get this job."

This is the most bald-faced politicking I've seen in a long, long time. I don't for the world believe he would cut ICA funding to invest in the university's academic product, but he clearly knows who's against him and why. We'll see if it works.  It certainly can't make the school's sports fans very happy.

hahaha.... that's rich.

One way to cut athletic spending?  Fire head football coach and have "some other faculty member" volunteer on the sidelines.

Another idea... strike a deal with local establishment for discounted or quid-pro-quo tattoos for recruits to control recruiting budgets.

Well, since the athletic department had a $24,000,000 profit last year, they probably did okay with their spending. You can argue about what a profit means, but they're not costing the school or their students much money.

Wow.  I assume you are taking great liberties with that sentence and his response was more nuanced.

Akron does have 18 sports.  So, they will likely be cutting down to 16.  Look out track and field.  And, they have a rifle team.  Likely candidates for the knife.....

This is a very attractive, no-lose job right now.  They are going to have to pay someone big money to clean the place up.  Everyone knows cuts are needed.  And, in non-college towns nobody listens to complaints from the academic side.  Tressel has the ego to not give a ^&%* about anyone complaining.  It won't bruise him at all.

That response is almost verbatim based on live tweet from ABJ reporter in there audience.

Good grief.  Thanks for clarifying.  He's probably right then.  Add Athletics to the folks on campus who don't want him.

Zips Nation seems to think JT is inevitable and the mood is rather despondent.

We should all be despondent.  We may have a loud mouthed egomaniac MAC president who doesn't believe the MAC should be competing at the highest level.  Bad for the whole conference.

Then again, presidential candidates say a lot of things.  And then they meet the alums and big donors.

I doubt he is serious about reducing the athletic department's profile.  He's just willing to say anything to get the job.

About as damning an argument against Tressel as I have read anywhere.

ll

I grew up in Akron, went to the public schools there on the east side and rooted for the Zips when they were an NCAA final four team in their division in the 60's.   I played lots of pick up ball in Memorial Auditorium and went to many games in the Rubber Bowl.  My wife has her first  degree from Akron U.  My parents still live in the city.  Akron is home.  If this fellow gets the job as president, it will be a disgrace to the city and university.  "That's all I have to say about that."

I wonder if an old friend will give JT a few starter bow ties for the new job?

I read an article on his appearance at YSU to campaign for their prez position and had a thought about whether he should be conflicted out of that job.  He mentioned that he (and maybe his family) has given $23 million to the school through the years; it's even on his resume.  Wouldn't that at least give the appearance that he's buying the job?  State ethics laws may be a little fuzzy in this area.  I know that state employees can't receive anything of real value from anyone who does business with their agency.  But I'm not sure whether employing someone who has given millions of dollars to your university is prohibited.  I presume trustees might make handsome donations to their schools.  Hiring a president who is a big contributor sure smells, though.

I actually read the resume when UA posted it.  It's utterly ridiculous (downright laugh out loud comical) the things that he lists as qualifying him to run a university.  His only accomplishments in life have been running football teams, from which he was fired and is still serving a ban from the sport by its governing body.  His selection will really say a lot of bad things about American higher education and the misplaced priorities of Americans and Ohioans.

In the probably unlikely event that both YSU and UA offer Sweatervest the job, which one does he take?

Good job, guys!

While I was asking a serious question, I really appreciate your humor.  Can always depend on the BA folks for a good punch line!
