He is only 1 of 2 out of 26 chosen to continue, pretty impressive.

I think the Bobcat offense better learn to be more flexible, Beau and Boykin are both talented, yet the rushing numbers were dismal. Instead of innovating the offense to highlight the talented running backs, the offense used a formation that was doomed to failure with Tyler's inability or refusal to run.

Or, the offensive line was unable to consistently control the line of scrimmage and open holes.

I agree the offensive line had it's problems, many of them injury related, but without the QB option it was to easy for teams to load the box and squash the run.  As Monroe often commented during the season, when Boykin and Beau were both healthy, why not use them both in the backfield at the same time. Especially with Beau's speed and his ability to take the short pass out of the backfield, this would have forced defenses find a way to contain Beau while dealing with Boykin's power. The same thing years ago with Chris Garret, the offense did not optimize his potential. There were not nearly enough outside runs to take advantage of his elusiveness.

Yes, but he still has a long road ahead. Now he has moved up from "tryout" to UFA, a big step, but most UFA's do not make it to the final team, or even to the practice squad. The roster is at 90 currently, and needs to cut eventually to 53, plus 6 I think on the practice squad. If you figure that 40 or so of the spots are "pretty safe", the other 50 players are competing for about 13 roster spots plus 6 on the practice squad.

Good luck to him, and to the others that have have tryouts or UFA agreements.

Legitimate points, and I don't have any answers. I have to believe the coaches did not themselves believe the two-back set was an effective solution. Otherwise, they would have done it. I don't think its realistic to assume the coaches didn't consider the two-back option. It's just too obvious.

There are just too many unanswered questions for ordinary fans to have any idea what was going on with the offense. We just don' t know what was going on, and I suspect there were multiple issues and those issues got worse as the season progressed.

The one thing Ohio has committed to is a balanced offense with a roster heavy on WRs. I believe this reflects a change in philosophy from "run the ball" to "take what the defense gives us." I am not sure the offense is yet where they would like it to be when it was adopted. Credit defensive coordinators for taking TT away after his great soph season. The new offensive philosophy was then capable of adjusting from TT to Beau for 1600 yards. Beau then becomes the focus of every DC on the schedule. The Independence Bowl should have been a preview of 2013, Beau for 100 and WRs for 300+. Sadly the 2013 defense did not show up as a "championship" defense. The OL had it's problems. Having seen, at the Independence Bowl, what they want to do. I am not in favor of playing musical schemes. Especially when the other schemes necessitate vastly different rosters to be successful. In 2014 I am hoping to see a championship defense with an effective take what they give offense. Independence Bowl like result. God willing and a healthy offensive line.

A two back set is a mixed bag. Yes, it gives you more power, but it also move another defender into the box. Interestingly Ohio's average yards/carry went up, not down, when they moved from a 2-back set to a single back.

Another way to get more power is to use a two-tight end set, which Ohio did do. They were somewhat more limited in that area that normal last year with all the TE injuries.

Anyone who watched our offense last year and does not think that we should have reacted to the blahfailureBUTM offense some ways into the year by trying something different--hey, I know that you love your 2 lb 1988 cell phone but did you know that they have smart phones now?

Or, as I've stated ad your nauseum, if a CEO had what we had last year and didn't react, do you think the shareholders and board of directors would have endured it without making a lot of noise.  Superwoodenconservative can get you 20-0 at the end of the first half to 20-23.

Where's the MAC title.  We're probably going to see dynamic alright...watching 'kron MACC soon.

A couple of comments in this thread I have to agree with.  Both Garrett and Beau appear to have been underutilized or not utilized to the fullest of their talent.  RB is still too important of a position (even with the wide open offenses) to let this happen.  I hope we get a lot more success (either running the ball or catching it) out of our RBs this year.  Of course  better OL play is more likely to let that happen.

In 2012 Beau was utilized for 312 carries and 1,600 yards. Probably over utilized in the coaches eyes. I expect the plan for 2013 was to get his carries down, knowing his yards would be down too. Foster's yards increased by 350 over 2012. Note: Foster might yet be a pro also and was worthy of utilization. Cochran's yards increased by 300 over 2012 and Waters' yards increased by 220 over 2012. Beau's carries were down, but, yards to these WR's went up by 870. Ohio's offense is designed to be balanced capable of taking what is most available from the D. Beau only had three seasons, one sharing reserve carries, two as the starter. He finished with 2976 yards. Pretty good.

Ok.  We got more passing yardage from various receivers and less running yardage from Beau in 2013 and lost more games.  I think my point is valid.  Maybe 300+ carries is too many but BUTM seriously did not work in 2013 which is the year I was talking about.  My other point is probably the more valid.  The O-line better improve in 2014 or it will be a long and disappointing season.

I think Cochran's stats show how the lack of a running game also affected the passing game toward the end of the season.  He was getting a lot of yardage early in the season off play action, but as teams caught on that our running game was ineffective, his production went down also.  He had 32 catches for 656 yds and 4 TDs during the regular season. In the first seven games he had 25 catches for 557 yds and 3 TDs.  The last five games: 7 catches for 99 yds and 1 TD.  He had at least 3 catches in each of the first 7 games, while the most in the last five games was 3 catches (vs Buffalo) -- just two against BG and UMass and none vs Fiami and Kent.  We really do need a running game to make the passing game work well.

Of course. Had they stopped trying to run the ball, the offense would have been worse yet.
