I like that this can be a day trip with it being mid-afternoon. Unlike Louisville, where I was only too happy to stay for three nights, I'll save some money this year. Lexington has little charm from my few experiences there, although it may be that I'm just out of the loop.

(Cue someone from Kentucky eloquently telling me how wrong I am about Lexington and its many charms.)

Just take the weekend and do the entire Bourbon trail.

Tickets

Stubhub has Ohio @ Kentucky for about $32.00 per. Some 550 tickets remain. They are only showing 10 season passes left at about $335.00. As I have never been there this is another shot at a good day with the Bobcat Faithful. $32.00 per sure beats pro baseball tickets.

Have driven that route several times (from Athens and Columbus). Very nice drive.

You are both right!  

I have a very fond memory of driving back home the Sunday after the Knorr-led Bobcats beat UK.  Never did those miles go more quickly or more pleasantly than that Sunday morning.  Oh what a win will do to your whole perspective on the world!  GO OHIO!

I'm not 100% on it, but I overheard a conversation that they run up until the Kentucky Derby. Which doesn't make a lot of sense to me considering you have all of the warmer months after the Derby.

Can confirm, this distillery in my opinion is the best on the trail.

Also for the craft beer enthusiasts, The Village Idiot on West Short Street has a great selection of drafts and bottles.  Plus their food is pretty damn good too!

I definitely want to check out Woodford sometime.  

I have been to Jim Beam it was just so-so in my opinion. If you are in the area check it out but I wouldn't go there just for that reason.  

Again just my opinion but I was kind of disappointed the last time I went to Maker's Mark in Loretto.  I was there back nearly ten years ago and it was a more rustic, timeless experience that I thought fit the location and tradition very well.  Especially the tasting area and where you can dip your own redhead.  I went back more recently and the distillery tour ends in a more modern, urban feeling tasting room that just doesn't seem to fit their brand IMHO.  

Visiting or not definitely sign up for their Ambassador's Club.  You get free loot from time to time and will have a barrel stamped with your name.  Mine is currently available for bottling so I need to get down there soon!

No, the Spring Meet runs the month of April (up until Derby) and the Fall Meet runs the month of October.

I did the full trail last year after Louisville, and you should miss Buffalo Trace, just west of Lexington.  Also check Town Branch, makers of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale.  They have a great tasting center in Lexington, and have several varieties of beer and bourbon.

From Athens, take the Appalacian Highway (S.R. 32) west to the West Union exit, a left turn at the traffic light onto S.R.41. Follow S.R. 41 about 10 miles past West Union, and turn left at Bensonville (I believe) to take a state route (368?) straight down to Manchester, on the Ohio River, turning right on U.S. 52 toward Cincinnati. Follow U.S. 52 until you get to U.S. 68 (about 10 miles?). Follow U.S. 68 across the bridge into Kentucky (this bypasses Maysville). Then follow U.S. 68 to Lexington.

If you have time, and especially if you like horses, there is a KY state route that goes off to the right before you get to Lexington that will take you to the Kentucky Horse Park. Well worth a visit. I-75 is just beyond the Horse Park to finish the trip to Lexington, going south. I believe this KY state route is also called Ironwood Pike, or something like that.

that's a good one. another option if you're coming from Athens and you want to go crazy with back roads is to take 32 West, just past Jackson look for a left turn for Rt 139 to Minford. Follow 139 through Minford until it ends at Rt 52 just outside Portsmouth. (Rt 139 is a super fun 2 lane rollercoaster with a couple of hairpin turns to boot. Really fun if you've got a bike or a stick shift car.)

Turn left on Rt23 in Portsmouth, go over the bridge and take a right on Rt 8. Follow it to the AA Hwy (Rt 10 then 9, I think) to the south end of Maysville, hang a left on 68 and that will take you straight into Lexington.

Would be good for the trip down but if coming back the same night I would look for a more conventional route.

As someone who grew up in Portsmouth, I highly recommend you keep your eyes closed while driving through the city. The sights around the city are gorgeous though.

As someone who grew up in Portsmouth, I highly recommend you keep your eyes closed while driving through the city. The sights around the city are gorgeous though.


SR 139 is the Kings Island of highways.  After Minford and Clarktown you'll come through Rubyville where I attended Jr. Hi. and my brothers and sister attended high school. Going up Divide Hill (rains on one side not on the other) you'll pass the first of valleys of my home Twin Valley.  After the second valley on your right you'll go about 1/4 of a mile and to the right is my old home....a house that my dad built. As Dallas said it and the Portsmouth area are a shadow of itself.  Detroit Steel helped pay my way through college and it's gone.  My dad and brother worked for the N & W railroad and it's almost gone. Many of my friends worked at the Atomic Energy plant in Piketon and it's about gone.  Do check out the flood wall murals if you have time and Shawnee Forest remains one of the wildest areas in the state. I did a 3 day pre-hike there before I hiked the Appalachian Trail and found it to be tougher than the AT.
