http://tracking.si.com/2014/05/29/alabama-will-play-anybody-for-12th-game-in-2015/?xid=nl_siextra

Alabama athletic director Bill Battle said he has called numerous teams, as well as ESPN and the Southeastern Conference for help, but that Alabama still doesn’t have anyone to come to Tuscaloosa to complete the team’s 12-game schedule for 2015.

“Right now we’d take anybody,” Battle said, via CBSSports.com. “We’ve called everybody we know.”

Naturally a visit to Peden would be expected at a later date in return.

Naturally...

Offer to only take half the guaranteed money for a return game in Peden in 2016.
Might be our only shot at getting College Gameday on campus in Athens

Never going to happen of course.   But why not make bama basketball come here as part of the deal.

Why play Bama when you've got this murderer's row lined up??

2015
9/5 - at Idaho
9/12 - Marshall
9/19 - Southeastern Louisiana
9/26 - at Minnesota

We would have to give up a home game to complete this deal. Hmm.... which is best for the athletic department?

1) Home game against SE Louisiana or Marshall
2) Buy game at Alabama
3) Deal to include a home and home with Alabama basketball

If they are really desperate, I would think a straight up guarantee could exceed $1M. Go for a deal to include a home and home in basketball and we still may be able to secure a guarantee that would cover buying out SE Louisiana.

I think we passed on a similar opportunity with them a few years ago. Kent or Akron took the date and the check and got hammered.

Seriously, I don't know why any MAC team wants to go down there to get embarassed just for a check.  I'd pass instantly!

Given it was a decade or so ago, but NIU went down there and beat them. Also, they didn't have such a luminary coach then either. Never say never is my slogan!

How could we refuse this.  Coach says that recruiting is up, so we shouldn't worry about 'train wreck' such as the old days (when we'd surely be down 42-0 four minutes into the game).  Wouldn't this pique the interest of the casual fans of OHIO FOOTBALL, so boost the program?  Players have pride, want to compete against the best.  And wouldn't this aid recruiting, to be able to point to ability to sched top opponents?  (Do recruits go nutso over the chance to play EMU?)  The money couldn't hurt.

Is this the same guy that thinks OUr team is an embarassment to Ohio?  Imagine the level of embarassment and gnashing of teeth if we take this on and get OUr respective hats handed to us.  Frankly, after Louisville 2013, I'll take a pass on any more high visibility games until we find our legs with the new guys coming up.  2016? Maybe.

Isn't it  going to be hard to find someone when they stated they're willing to play ANYONE? This is like someone telling you you were the 10th person they called to go do something that night.

There I go projecting feelings and emotions on the business of sports again.

LIke it or not, I'm a combo of happy optimism and frank reality.  I never commented much about Louisville 2013 as I thought it was just one of those things.  But the games against BG, beefs, recent inability to beat a MAC team over .500, 20-point outscored 4th quarter of last year's bowl game, the lack of player leadership allowed to predominate last year--that's unacceptable reality...some of which was an embarrassment.  The 2nd half vs beefs, the first quarter vs. BG, etc.     Here's the thing.  If one couldn't see how bad some of that was, then I believe that one is not capable of reasonably objective evaluation.

That said, I still have hope, still will be very happy to be shown that last year was an outlier and that the spirit of Coach's best teams lives on in 2014/15.

Indirectly, yes, of course they do.  One of the strongest selling points for recruiting is the probability of going to bowl games. If you play too many games the likes of Alabama, it becomes more likely you will miss bowl game eligibility. A team that goes 0-4 in OOC is going to have to go 7-1 or better in conference, something only the 2006 and 2009 teams managed.

The scheduling strategy put in place by Schaus back in 2009 for 6 home games a year and winnable non-conference games against NMSU and North Texas was the right strategy for the time. The MAC only had 3 contracted bowl games and in some years there were as few as 4 schools making a bowl. The schedule worked as Ohio has now made 5 straight bowl games. With the MAC having 5 contracted games now and a high chance of placing at least 6 every year in a conference that usually has only 6 schools with 6-6 records I think its time to step things up some. I would try and get more AAC and ACC schools in Peden Stadium because that will boost ticket sales. I would avoid playing regular Top 15 schools from the top conferences for a money game that we'll embarrass ourselves in. We are at the point though where on any given year we can compete with Syracuse or Colorado on the field and go out and beat Marshall the next week. If we lose an extra game every 2 years ago because of it that's okay because now we can bowl at 6-6. I am getting tired of playing some of the weakest non-conference schedules in the country.

I think it's good that Ohio is upgrading from the likes of Louisiana-Lafayette and NMSU to the likes of Kansas. A few games against the likes of Ohio State, Penn State or Alabama are not a bad thing, but playing the likes of Louisville, Kentucky, or Tennessee is also good.
