I'm always unsure how seriously I can take these kinds of previews. How closely does this reporter actually follow this team? How many practices has he attended? How well does he understand the recent history of this team's strategy and tactics?

It would be easier to believe if it were under Jason Arkley's name--someone who we know is local and paying close attention. Not to say this reporter didn't do his homework, but it's hard to believe any national publication can commit the necessary time to all 120 or so D1 programs.

To me it sounds like this reporter definitely did their homework and looked into things, but I doubt they follow the team closely. Maybe they watch MACTION sometimes.

CFN is always very thorough in their predictions, previews and reviews. They've not been far off on their opinions of Ohio since Frank has arrived. However, they definitely show their bias towards the BCS-level competition and write off pretty much everyone else.

Also, very interesting in their praise for Maleek Irons. Maybe they know something we don't?

That's an interesting top 10 players list. IMO, the writer really undervalues Cochran, Carpenter, and Crutcher and overvalues Kristoff (gets burned too much on passing plays and whiffs on too many tackles for my liking) and Mcleod (who I think is a nice player, but top 10? I dunno).

My top 10 players:

1) Cochran
2) Bass
3) Basham
4) Russel
5) Vick
6) Carpenter
7) Ingol
8) Crutcher
9) Mcqueen
10) Yazdani

As someone who is very high on Irons, I found it interesting, too. It was especially interesting in light of the fact that none of the recruiting services, including Scout.com, paid any attention to Irons when he was recruited. Personally I have to hope that Irons is able to redshirt this year, but if he does have a 1000 yard season, that's OK, too.

Spoke with an NFL scout and he says #44 is Mr Upside on defense

I like Arkley, but I think it is hard for him to criticize any of the Bobcat teams, else he might lose access to the coaches and players.

This preview certainly takes a more optimistic tone regarding our offensive potential vs others I have read. Personally, I think our offense will surprise and I'm excited that we have a co-OC who can provide some other perspective and hopefully new wrinkles.

Arkley tends to give a fair assessment, even regarding poor performance, but usually makes sure not to sound like he's placing blame on any one person or piling on. In terms of accurate team assessments by an outsider I've found that Paul Meyerberg of USA Today is hard to beat.

I would love to be a fly on the wall any time Paul Myerberg and Phil Steele happen to be in the same room.

"That fly became just the fifth in Phil Steele's living room history to successfully complete a circuit around the room in under three seconds and is just the 17th of 246 flys to not get swatted by this old rolled up newspaper I keep on this cofee table." -Phil Steele
