UNLV QB, after leading the team to an undefeated start, is now either leaving the team or holding out due to NIL issues. This is a new one for me. He's hoping to use a redshirt on this, which he'll be able to do. However, this doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the redshirt rule. Wonder if this could prompt some changes to that rule in that it needs to be approved by a third party if the athlete started multiple games.

I love it! Treat Adolescents like grown men and seasoned professionals and this is what you get. At the sametime, good for him. There is no player's union looking out for him, and the MAN wants to get paid, so pay the MAN.

This will be the first (that is public knowledge at least) of what will likely be more than can be kept up with. Good on him, though. If he was promised certain thing$ that have not been provided, then he made a good decision if UNLV (or an extension of them) did not follow through.

in his case he is well past puberty. Has a degree from Holy Cross and was working on his masters at UNLV. Absolutely good for him. Will wait to hear the other side of the story, but why burn his red shirt by accepting a 91% pay cut from what the coaching staff promised him. Not some NIL drifter, but a member of the staff. Also doing a solid for the next guy by calling out UNLV for bait and switch. As well as letting fans and boosters know UNLV is playing fast and loose with their contributions. Lesson to all - get it in writing!!

I can see it now, a week before the championship game the Alabama QB decides he's not playing unless he gets a raise because the QB from USC, the other team in the championship game, is being paid more than he is and that's just not fair. It seems the concept of team spirit, camaraderie, and dare I say school spirit is out the window. I think to the extent that I sense this kind of an attitude in a team or a player, the less I'm inclined to root for them. Maybe some of you like our new semi-pro college ball, but I'm not one of them. I still root for Ohio and other MAC teams, but I don't quite have the enthusiasm that I used to.

What OCF is getting at is interesting, because these are not annual contracts like in the NFL. They're basically game-to-game, especially for the first three weeks of the year when a player can declare redshirt before the fourth game. But they can choose to sit out without repercussions from a CBA at any point in the season in a request for more money. So very curious how this will play out. I don't see it being much of an issue at our school, but definitely at the big places.

Where it could affect OHIO is when a player is having a breakout year here, does he choose to pack it up before possible injury later in the year to preserve his worth for the next school?

Seems to me that schools be able to revoke scholarships in a case like this. It's not like he's taking time off for mental health or family reasons. He's just refusing to perform his part of the bargain with the school because he wants to be paid more. The guy's getting a free ride but not doing what he agreed to. The school can't sue to make him play, so it should have some recourse. If a pro player holds out, he usually gets fined by the team or just doesn't get a paycheck. Something similar should be available to schools.

most schools have always been able to revoke scholarships for any number of reasons - valid and not. he will certainly have his scholarship revoked since he has left the team.

Totally agree with your assessement, but, as a side note, research is indicating that adolescence is now lasting as late as 29 years of age. They think that this is due to people living longer. In the past, they assumed that adolescence ended at the age of 15 or 16, which is why they gave us all driver's licenses then. It also explains, in part, besides the economic pressures on young people these days, why so many young people are waiting so long to get a driver's license in this day and age. When you talk about the adolescent mind, you are still talking about the brain developing and growing and this does tend to lead to impulsiveness and poor decisions that don't take future consequences into consideration. In this case, I think the Kid is nailing it and, regardless of his athletic potential, has a very bright future ahead of him indeed.

Spent four years in FCS. Currently, completing 43% of his passes and he is walking out on THEM.

This kid isn't exacty Miller Moss here. Pretty wild story. Back to the FCS you go.

I can definitely see this happening during Bowl season. I am going to opt-out unless I get paid.

When I saw his stats I chuckled! Have to wonder if part of him isn’t thinking a bigger payday awaits?

I am old school, M.D.W.S.T, and I have the same thoughts about commitment, dedication, and not letting your team members down. However, mind you, there is a lot of he said/she said going on right now surrounding all of this, is that the claim is that this young man, as reportedly verified by his own father, was promised certain things that never materialized such as $100,000. If this happened to a professional athlete, wouldn't we be saying, "Yeah, of course, the guy should walk?" But here is the rub, the kid is technically a professional athlete now that NIL money dictates that he be so, so, perhaps, ideas of team unity and commitment have now gone out the window? I don't know. I also don't get the feeling that this kid really sees himself playing in the NFL or having a future as a professional athlete outside of college, so, if nothing else, he has launched himself into the National Limelight, for better or worse, concerning the potential pitfalls/benefits of NIL. There was supposed to be transparency surrounding all of this in terms of what people were getting paid and how, but it seems that the exact opposite is happening. It's not clear whether an actual contract was signed or whether this was just a verbal promise. This is leading to revelations about other athletes who did not get what they were promised or were tricked into thinking that the car they were provided and the house that they were living in was going to be there's to keep, but was only temporarily being provided to them. This is clearly the Wild, Wild West and I suspect there is going to be some serious pushback to all of this. After all, it doesn't sound neccessarily like the Transfer Portal is giving anyone a true edge here. The funniest example of this to me is Florida State, who, despite having all these supposed NFL candidates, is not exactly burining it up on the Gridiron this year.

Was it Capital or Holy Cross that he was playing for? Regardless, I hear you, but it sounds like he got just as much at UNLV as he has gotten anywhere else. I don't know, I am a retired Boomer, who probably settled for less than I should have at times. Still, I did really good for myself and my family, but there is a part of me that loves this Kid for standing up to someone who may have misled him or, worst/case scenario, ouright lied to him. If I am not mistaken, it sounds like if he went ahead and played at UNLV then he would lose out on any other chance of landing an NIL deal elsewhere due to his elgibility having run out. Of course, it remains to be seen whether this decision now makes him less palitable to others. I don't know, interesting stuff. If nothing else, the nature of the game is changing.

Does anyone really care about the education he was getting at UNLV? Will he just drop out of all of his classes? Some schools always played fast and loose with academics for football players, but now it seems they may become totally optional.

If he had “promises” and didn’t get anything in writing (NIL’s are contract), well I guess he just learned a life lesson. Him and his father, who should know better.

Interesting, school saying the young man got all he was promised and after the start the family wanted to renegotiate! If this is true, good luck finding your next team.

The old saying “there’s two sides to every story” often holds true. What we heard first was his story. Since then we’ve heard from UNLV. The truth lies somewhere in the between. The question is, where in between. Either way, it’s yet another issue that isn’t good for college (or should I say pro) football. Whether one side is at fault, or both, either way it’s not positive for the sport. But this is where we are today with this sport. And things like this won’t be the last we hear about either.

This one makes sense and OFTEN happens at big schools, but buddy - YOU made the decision to go there. Transfer to OU if you wanna play 60 snaps a game.

Yep, and with the money, we going to see more of this. Thing is, this does not help them land their next stop
