I'm still trying to wrap my brain around what we just saw. Ohio has a first and goal inside the three. You have a 225-pound running back who hasn't been stopped yet. Yet Tyus never touched the ball. Huh? And with all the passing attempts, the incomplete passes stopped the clock from running down, so Syracuse had enough time to score again. Huh? I still don't understand why former coach Solich and coach Albin treat our quarterback being under center like a plague. This has bitten us before. It just bit us again! Ugh!!!

At some point you have to ignore the numbers in the box and just give the big guy the ball.

Did first-year Syracuse head coach out-coach Albin in the first half? At least in the final 2 minutes? Ohio can't put the ball in the end zone running 6 plays inside the 10. Then Syracuse scores 7 going 75 yards in under 1 minute.

I don't disagree with your point, but I think that you are missing the fact that this Syracuse Team has some real talent and highly physical players on this team. They are much quicker and much more athletic than we are on both sides of the ball. That's why they are Power 5 and we are not.

However, a 7-0 ohio advantage over the last minute of the first half instead of a 7-3 Syracuse advantage over that same time would have been nice.

Exactly!

As I texted a friend during the game, it seems that when we get in the red zone our play calling becomes downright stupid. I realize that yards are harder to come by the closer you get to the goal line because the defense can pack it in, but I still think you run Tyus more close to the goal line, or fake it to him and give to someone else in a two back set, which we need to run, IMHO.

Overall, though, I thought we played well with a few mental miscues, and too many dropped potential interceptions. Go OHIO!

Perhaps my memory is failing me at this advanced age, but wasn't the criticism of Albin when he was Solich's offensive coordinator that he would just consistently run the ball up the gut while in the Red Zone? If true, this guy can't catch a break. I hear you guys, but I think that Syracuse would have figured out how to stop our run game if we hadn't of mixed it up, especially in the Red Zone. Then again, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I’d like to see a two back set also in that situation and maybe even take it one step further. On the goal line, to take advantage of our overall depth at RB, run the old T formation. Tyus, Hunt, McCormick behind Navarro under center. Use motion (assuming legal). Could also cause confusion for the defense which could help too. Would at least probably make Sports Center no matter the outcome. :)

BTC, Penn State and the Jacksonville Jags have used it recently as have others. Maybe I should have called it a full house backfield instead.

Certainly you wouldn’t suggest I throw away my Dark Side of the Moon and Montrose albums too would you? :)

We were running this power formation in 1979 (and into the 1980s after I had matriculated to Ohio University) at Grandview Heights under legendary coach Larry Larson, a Woody Hayes disciple.

PSU also had superior talent than the team they were playing. Until this team can figure out how to throw and catch, it will struggle in the RZ. What passes down there they did attempt, showed poor timing relationship.

Play calling in the red zone was a little baffling obviously. I was wondering why Bryce Butler saw no snaps down there? He’s about the closest thing to a sniffer they have. Use your best down there to at least attempt a run.

What they tried didn't work, so obviously it would have worked if they have run BUTM, er, TUTM. ;)

Seriously, I remember a few years ago, an Ohio team was struggling to put the ball into the endzone from inside the 10, and they made it a point of emphasis over the next week to find an answer, and did. I have no doubt that the coaches will be putting some effort this week into finding an answer. I'm not remotely surprised that this team still has things to work on. Rather, I am surprised and pleased that they did quite well at a number of things. As this team continues to improve, it may end up a very good Bobcat team.

On another note, in the post game press conference, Tyus looked thrilled with his transfer choice. He loves being a Bobcat, and he loves the offensive line that paved his way.

Christ, the Syracuse board was even confused. I was screenshotting and posting messages to twitter. "What are they doing?" Does the coach know we can't stop that RB?" "Is the RB hurt? Whats going on?" "If they're not going to use him, can we?" "They don't want to win obviously"

Tyus was absolutely brutalizing their defensive line. He had 200 yards on 16 touches. Just embarrassing them. OU had at least 8 chances inside the 5, I saw someone else say it was 12, I'm too disgusted to go back and look, Tyus got zero touches. Zero. Zero. None. Not one. Your RB who has 100 yards rushing in the 1st half got zero touches to put it in the endzone. Because your coach agrees its not 1973 anymore. You can't just run it in?! That would be silly! Why not try 7 QB rushes. It's 2024! Maybe a little razzle dazzle! Maybe some weak armed ducks, bc in 1973 thats how QB's looked.

It doesn't make sense is 1973. It doesn't make sense in 2023. It doesn't make sense today.

Not to mention it was poor clock management. If you do run it there and do get stopped the clock keeps running (or Cuse burns a timeout) making it that much harder for them to march down to the other end and score.
