But everyone else at CBS picks BG to take the East, although no one has Ohio lower than third.  He picked BG to finish 4th behind Ohio, Buffalo and Akron, which lessens his cred.

I really do not put much stock in MAC Preseason polls.

This year may be our year.

The things that support this are:

Frank has been at the helm for ten years.
This may be the best defense I have seen and a great defense wins Championships.
We have some offensive weapons this season.

The things that may go against my argument are:

The Bobcat Offense finding ways to beat itself.
BG being that good this season.

Go Bobcats!!!

I love that going into the season we have everything to gain and nothing to lose.  It's rare that a MAC team goes into the season with high rankings and a bullseye on their backs and runs the table.  All we have to do is go back to the 2012 season to see that dreams/teams can crash and burn pretty quickly.  I also remember a team that came into the 2001 season with a pretty seasoned roster and lofty expectations but had a new coach.  Most on here know how that went.

I'm most concerned about Kent, EIU, and Idaho to start the season.  Those three games will be a greater indicator than Kentucky and Marshall.  Heck getting a win up in Portage County to start the season will be a pretty strong feather in our caps as its been a while since we have beaten the Flashes.  That game last year was perhaps the most disheartening and I think we should have played them much harder and the score been much closer.  I know I didn't see much heart displayed in that contest.  Here's the team's chance to show everyone that they are ready to put games like that from last year behind them and atone for it.

Interesting quote from Nathan Carpenter in yesterday's Messenger:

“We let things get down on us,” said senior safety Nathan Carpenter. “Eventually it got to the point that a lot of guys developed bad attitudes toward the game and we were just there to finish it out.

“As a player, you never want to see that. As a coach, you never want to see that in your players,” he continued.

“That will not happen again this year. We made sure of that this offseason.”

I think its the first time I've seen one of the players be so candid (almost said "frank") about the attitude during the last part of 2013.  The phantom safety started it, and it really snowballed from there.  Looks like this year's team is ready to make amends.

I really hope we beat Kent in Week 1. It'll feel terrible if we start 0-1 with Kentucky and Marshall on the slate.

The consensus has BG winning, and then a virtual tie between Akron-Ohio-Buffalo for 2-4. Ohio is clearly not the favorite, but they do have a couple things going for them:
1. Ohio will have a very good defense, and as has been said, defense wins championships. In the past nine years, Ohio's offensive performance is not correlated in any way to how well they have done, but their finish in the standings has been strongly related to how good the defense was. In the years that Ohio won the MAC East, they always had a good defense, but only in 2011 did they also have a good offense.
2. Look at the schedule, and what do you see? In games between the projected top 4 in the East:
Ohio - has home games against Akron, BG, and Buffalo
BG - gets only Buffalo at home, playing Ohio and Akron on the road
Akron - gets only BG at home, playing Ohio and Buffalo on the road
Buffalo - gets only Akron at home, playing Ohio and BG on the road

Game #1 against Kent State is key. We need to build that confidence heading into Kentucky and Marshall.

We beat kents.  Mark it.  W.  Write it down now.

There are questions on o-line and at qb, no doubt.  But remember back to the team we were, the gusto, before the last 20 games of tetivo.  I'm betting that the cloud is gone this year, that this year we play.  This team has some talent.

Very much looking forward to it.

We beat kents.  Mark it.
