Here's the take away -
he is criticized for cutting wrestling and reorganizing the Bulldog Foundation, the department's fundraising arm.
Tried to run the Green and White Club out of business here at OU even though we weren't a fundraising organization but the major contributor to athletics for over 50 years. I think there may be more to this story than meets the eye.

Fresno St Wrestling Coach

This is good for Fresno State -- people will realize this as time goes on," DeLiddo said. "Nobody liked Thomas Boeh. He was the most hated man on that campus. He's definitely not liked. He didn't care about anybody but himself and his résumé. He's self-centered. It's very difficult to work with him. ... I wouldn't be surprised if every coach on that campus is out celebrating tonight.
Wow, that wrestling coach let it all out!

In my mind, Perimeter, he'll always be remembered for the 24-hour, exhaustive, worldwide search that resulted in the hiring of Brian Knorr as our head coach. I once had a confrontation with him at the Athens Post Office a few days after my letter to the editor was printed in the Columbus Disgrace asking for Knorr's firing. His attitude was basically: I'm the AD and I know football; you are just a dumb ignorant fan; I nonetheless appreciate your support of the Bobcats and your season ticket money.

And remember my good friend, he came her as Tom and left insisting that people call him Thomass.

His legacy continues Maine, Northwestern, Northern Iowa, Ohio University and now Fresno State. You can talk to many of those that served under him at any of those institutions and they will verify what the retired wrestling coach stated. Ask Houska, Hunter and many former OHIO personnel !!

Tom Boeh will land somewhere. He's the Mike Keenan of college AD's; effective, respected and loathed at the same time. He'll find someone who shares his high Type A personality who, despite the protests of more rational people, will put him into yet another job that he can be fired from .

I met someone at Northwestern who worked with Boeh (Day before Solich's first game) and he was glad Boeh left Northwestern.

I heard at the time from what I considered a good source that Grobe did not have any immediate plans to leave Ohio when he did but that a big argument with Boeh was the impetus for an immediate job search. According to the story, Grobe stormed out of Boeh's office with the two still screaming at each other. Grobe slammed a few doors on the way to his office and got right on the phone to various contacts announcing his availability for the next decent job that opened up. I never heard exactly what the argument was about.

Don't believe everything you hear. The above would be so far out of Grobie's character. Not to mention, the events as described just did not happen.

Plus when you consider where Grobe's office was in the Convo and Tom's was in the Convo, there aren't many doors to slam. Sounds like an urban myth to me.

I believe Alan committed a typo, as that reads I believe he meant to type Peden.

Oops, I'd never pass an AP History class with that typo. Good catch Southern. See OCF, even those rebels can read and write the king's English.

I don't believe it's an "urban myth" but it certainly might have been embellished a little in the telling. I think it's essentially accurate in that there was such an argument. The person who told me this was very surprised that Grobe would react like that and said that it was the first time he had seen that side of his personality. If I recall correctly, this person claimed to have witness this personally.

I have also heard a rift between Boeh and Grobe was the impetus for his looking to leave. I don't know if there was a singular incident that made things irreconcilable.

I am no fan of the Boeh Way. I found him as unapproachable as many other did. But here is my prediction for the future of Fresno State.
Boeh made two tremendously unpopular decisions. The most powerful person to remember the mess that Boeh was hired to clean up retired.
The Bulldog Foundation raised $7 million a year before Boeh got there. They raised $4.1 million last year.
$2.9 million in grudge funding had a new president to bend the ear of. If it wasn't for that troublesome AD of the Year award, he'd have been replaced sooner.
And once that grudge funding comes back, so will the compliance problems.
At which point a tremendous boor will be able to say he told them so.

The incident with Grobe was true. The first major disagreement was over the contracts for asst. coaches. Grobe wanted to elevate their salaries to be competitive and too keep several who were planning to go elsewhere. Boeh's remark was get coaches who we can afford. Loyalty meant nothing to Boeh. That is why I was so surprised when Tim took the Fresno job.
There were several other matters that also were involved, but know that this was the beginning of the end of the Grobe era.
Knorr's hiring was an absolute disaster because he too was limited on asst. contracts. Knorr had no chance to succeed. Knorr had the football knowledge, but could not develop loyalty among staff.

The two never got along, but anyone who knew the situation would know that Grobe didn't answer to the AD and that the entire thing was a one-sided childish dislike due to the fact that the AD had no power of his coach. . I dispute the Grobe was looking to get out of town line. But to each his own.

Good points Pete, after cutting sports It's an uphill battle. Look at what we went through in our own community.

Seems like we have two versions. One is that he left primarily over a dispute/disuptes with Boeh, and the other is that he just left for the money. Maybe there is some truth to both?

He may have had the best HC job in college football for 12 years...not real high expectations/stress plus ACC money...so it could have been either reason.

And he somehow took Wake Forest to the Orange Bowl, so its not like he was a disaster in Winston Salem

Here's an unfortunate juxtaposition for Ol' Tom. The very day that the
NY Times
went to interview him is the day he was "promoted", drawing even more attention to it.
Interesting article, regardless. See Tim DeRuyter's take on the P5 break way, too.
