It seems that it happened way before last season. Could have dated back to as far as 2012 when the SI article came out. It's natural for anyone's head to get big.

From the sound of it, the staff is trying to have the players take their dogfood and swallow it about this year as the greatest camp ever. Vick was 1-4 today in 7 on 7 drills and Sprague 3-6. How far can we go this year with average play from the QB position?

Quite far, I would say. If the other parts of the team are as good as I think they will be, average play from the QB position will certainly be enough for a better record than 2013.

Quite far, I would say. If the other parts of the team are as good as I think they will be, average play from the QB position will certainly be enough for a better record than 2013.

Buffalo won 8 games with an average QB last year. Ohio could hit a brick wall against the better teams in the MAC for a 2012/2013 style ending.

to think, we were just a couple of completions away from having a great season. damn shame. maybe next year.

It's also a universal truth that the defense is ahead of the offense in the first scrimmage. Factor in that the offense is mostly new starters, while it is a veteran defense, and I would expect the defense to be far ahead of the offense. If the offense was scoring on the defense at this point I'd be surprised and concerned.

I will ask you this, is our D any better than BG? There is no way. The performances by the QB's mean forget about the BG game and with making it to Detroit. Time to start thinking about 2015.

Last year, we had a better QB in August than every other team in the East and damn near every other team in the MAC.  But not all the games are played in August.  We have one team to beat this month, then an entire month to get ready for the rest of the MAC.  There's plenty of time for improvement.  And games are won or lost not because of one player, but because of the combination of talent, game plan and execution by all members of the team.  BG's the team to beat ... now.  They're in the same situation we were in two years ago.  We woke up in a roadside ditch then.  They may have a ditch waiting for them, too.

It was seeing the excitement and enthusiasm these guys bring every day that caused me to get the Kool-aid out this early. Give me a team that gives 100%, I'll be 100% behind them, whether they win or lose.

I was at the forefront of the anger/disappointment over most of the last year and a half.

But that was rather a unique cloud.  If we get back to being the dynamic team that we were for the several years before that, we'll be fine.  While we're young on offense--and that's a big 'but'--this team appears to definitely have more talent than any Coach has put on the field at OHIO.

I think it's reasonable to hope that the cloud has lifted.  BG is good.  They have a fine qb.  But we will play.

UMMMM, I realize August is the month for green Kool-Aid, but are we really getting excited about all the **returning** starters we have from last year's defense? Is that the same defense BG hung 35 on in the first half? And went on to beat us 49-0? A now the season hasn't even started yet, but we're claiming that we have the superior defense. I'm confused.

Yeah, somewhere between getting McCabe'd and being down 14-0 two minutes into BG, I fell off the wagon. Then when we got Nate Terhune'd I hit rock bottom.

But it's a new season, and I want to drink again. I promised myself I would not be a pollyanna this year, though. High hopes = crushed dreams. Low expectations = can't be disappointed.

It's the same phenomenon as my Reds fandom...as soon as I get the least bit of optimism, they blow it. Only when I'm pessimistic do the Reds do anything good.
