On the quarterback battle

"I'm not necessarily one that says it has to be decided by this day or that day. Obviously as it gets closer to the start of the season the more that you have a guy in place that the team can really build around generally the better off you are. When they are very very close generally you let it (the quarterback battle) go on a little longer. You want the guy that starts to be the one, who has earned that position and we've got excellent competition."

Thats what Solich said at media day. Does that sound like somebody settled already on a starter? 'Very, very close' comment and 'excellent competition' comment make me think it's more up for grabs than many believe. Question is, if not Vick, who? Duckworth? Sprague?

Putting together all the pieces I've read, it's very close between Sprague and Vick. Windham is playing the best he has played to date, and showing excellent arm strength, but is still behind the other two after missing last season. Duckworth is still adjusting to the offense, and also getting adjusted to being able to play after his injuries. I would think Duckworth is a certain redshirt, but that's almost a given at QB.

If I had to make a guess, I'd say Vick will start, and Sprague will play in the second quarter, and then who plays in the second half will depend on the results of the first half.

I have to disagree with my friend LC. I think Solich will name a starter in a week or two, and that will be his guy...and it'll be Vick.

It's not good for anyone if Vick arrives in August and is anointed the starter. Hence, we all take part in this collective ruse. At some point, we'll all return to reality and Solich will call a press conference and announce Vick has earned the starting nod.

Play the best, most qualified guy.  It's the most fair thing for all involved.

Paul, we have the first scrimmage Tuesday, then another shortly thereafter. We should be well aware of who is ahead Tuesday. Below is taken from the Messenger about todays practice.

JD Sprague took the reps as the ‘First Team’ quarterback on Sunday morning. He and Derrius Vick have been alternating who practices as the ‘starter.’ Vick was with the 1s during Saturday afternoon’s practice, and is expected to be with the 1s again on Monday morning.

Sprague finished sharp, and connected on his last seven passes overall in the final two team segments. His best throw was a lazer he got to WR Sebastian Smith on a comeback route to the left side; it showed his improved arm strength and the accuracy needed to fit it into a tight space.

Vick had fewer throwing opportunities in the final two 11-on-11 segments, and hit two of five throws. Vick was just off a touch on a couple deep throws, including long bombs to RB A.J. Ouellette and WR Aaron Bradley.

Why does anyone use the word ruse here? Solich would prefer to have a clear-cut #1 at this point and if he did he wouldn't hesitate to name him. We all know Vick has a slight lead, but you never know. When Tettleton was first battling for the starting job, he was announced at the end of week 1. Solich didn't hesitate.

Tettleton was definitely the earliest, but not the first week.

That was at the conclusion of the first week at the media day. It was a few days later in the calendar because camp started later due to Ohio being on quarters and starting classes later.

I think competition is good. Leaders will rise to the top and it seems that leadership has been a theme for this team. No chance for complacency when you're fighting for your job. I like it.

Oops! Looks like I was wrong.

I still think this competition is primarily to light a fire under Vick's butt. We'll see...

Competition may be good for a while, but rotating guys in and out is going to spell disaster early on, especially with three tough road games to start the year. I can't remember the last time rotating QBs actually worked, save the Chris Leak and Tim Tebow campaign that won a national title at Florida. I guess you could say Michigan was good with Tom Brady and Drew Henson rotating, but they could have been loads better had they chose one and stuck with him. Other than that?

I don't mind if Ohio does it the first game or even the first half of the first game, but make a decision and stick with it. Rotating every other quarter or series is no good.

L.C. is probably right again.
It's hard to just use what is written in the Messenger as your source to make an intelligent decision.
I would expect this decision to be made within the next 10days so that the game week prep for Kent can be focused on the task at hand.

I'm not expecting them to rotate. I just expect both to get some game experience against Kent.

What do we know about Sprague? I know he was a walk-on, but was a preferred walk-on? Was he successful in HS? Is he a dual-threat or more of a pocket passer?

Let's just say all things are equal among the 3 QB's.   If this is the case then Vick became your QB the day they put that C on his jersey.

This is no slam on Vick but it I believe it would give him the extra edge from a coaches selection point.  This is why I would have held off on awarding that last captain spot.    I firmly believe it sent a strong message to the other QB's competing for that spot.

Just to clarify.
Im not saying he is not deserving of being elected captain.   Based on everything I've heard he is a very good leader on and off the field.   I was just responding to the question of vick being named the starter or not.

gmcsports.com/fbPlayerStats.aspx

Those stats seem to say slightly above average passer, decent runner.

Given our lack of success against Kent, we'd better be playing the best player period!

I agree that if all things are equal on the field, Vick's leadership ability will give him the start. On the other hand, I don't buy into the notion that Captains will always start. For example, I expect Tim Edmond to play this year, but I don't expect him to start. I think that despite Tim being a Captain, all the other running back believe that if they play well, they can earn the starting spot. Similarly, I think Windham and Sprague both believe that if they win the job on the field, they can be the starter.

Let's see how the scrimmage goes, and then worry about this question. As well as the defense is playing, it's going to be a tough environment for QBs.

Actually I did not say since he is a captain he will start.  I said.. If all things are equal... I believe he would get the node as a captain.

I also believe if Sprague and Windham are better they will start over Vick.   That's a given.  My point was what happens if none of the 3 have distanced themselves from the others....

Regardless,  I believe we are in good hands no matter who steps on that field at QB.

Can't wait for the season to start.

I'm not doubting Vicks Leadership ability.. However, to be honest .. We don't really know how he will lead on the field.

I would say even without the captaincy vote, Vick should be the starter if everything else is equal. He's been in the program longer, giving him more experience with the other players as well as the playbook. He's seen game action, and had some success in games (think of his big 80 yard TD in the bowl game last year). I think he's shown composure and some success to where if all is equal, he deserves to have the upper hand. In other words, it was his spot to lose. If he hasn't lost it, it's still his.

Despite the competition going on, I'd say Vick is probably 90% sure to start on Aug 30.  How much he plays depends on how well he handles the team.  If he moves the O well, even without getting TDs, he'll probably get the vast majority of snaps.  If you keep the O on the field, TDs will happen.  I expect Sprague will at least get some snaps, maybe in the 2nd quarter, because that's been Solich's MO the past few years.  The amount of time Wyndham or Duckworth are on the field depends on the score.

It was apparent from the few snaps he took last year.  He's very mobile, has a good arm (I remember one really nice toss on a scramble), can throw on the run and isn't afraid to tuck it and take off.
