PG, without going into any details, I can confirm that Ryan Boykin had "non-football" issues that limited his playing time. These were not academic issues or anything that would have landed him in jail. But issues affecting team morale.

+1

Lots of recent agreement here.  Are BTC and OCF the new Devon Miles and Sean Taylor from Drum Line???????

I think we are more like the Marx Brothers.  Only thing is I can't figure out which of us is Grocho and which is Zeppo.

From your years on that oil tender, more like you'd be Gummo, the forgotten brother.

Hey, grunt, I think you are more like Gummo -- since you like to gummo up the works with your comments!

I'm not sure.  I think that morale/personality issues say whether you are on the team or dress for the game.  Once you dress for the game, the guys most likely to lead to OUr team's best performance should play.

A reasonable (non-extreme edge) argument can be made that was not the case last year.

One more thought on this subject:

Look at the young WR's over at BG...Clint Stephens and Roger Lewis. These guys are BCS talents with offers from schools like Miami...the one in FLORIDA.

I said it all of last season, and I'll say it again now: we are being lapped in terms of athletic ability by other teams in our conference. We can't trot out second rate athletes (albeit with great attendance to team meetings and excellent blocking skills) and expect to compete with BG for the next several years. Look for more 50-0 losses in the future...spoiling your Tuesday night plans! I ordered a pizza and bought fancy craft beer for this?!

If a RS Freshman with NO GAME EXPERIENCE is going to start for us, then we should be hearing that he is DOMINATING practice and scrimmages. Or, at least, we should get SOME MENTION that this guy is really good. Is that too much to ask? Am I insane?

At its essence, I don't trust the coaches anymore and I don't think the program is headed in the right direction. So there ya go.

Arkley called Cope the most consistent WR yesterday.

Maybe we should wait and see what performance is like before we start judging coaches' decisions? I mean, we're still two weeks away from kickoff. There's time for someone else to claim that spot.

There is only one way to know. We'll just have to wait and see how they play.

Cope's high school performance smacks of good athlete.

Might be a taller, faster Matt Waters. Same size exactly as Riley Dunlop. Coach Dixon seems to enjoy coaching and relies on these types of young men/athletes. Can't blame him.

Especially at WR I think you have to give Ohio's coaches credit for recruiting and developing good players and putting the right guys on the field.

Injuries on the OL are more worrisome.  Arkley is saying if the first game were held today, two true freshman would start on the OL?  I'll bet there isn't another team in FBS who will do that on opening day.

On the plus side I am excited by the attitude of this year's team.  In the pre-season, every team will say they had a great summer and how they're bigger, stronger, and faster -- but the comments from Ohio this year feel different from the typical preseason hype.  More substantial.

OK, here  you go. Arkley, in his blog was asked by Schaus which of the wide receivers he thought have stood out in practice. Summarizing Arkley's answers:
1. Herman Brunis - This true freshman always hustled, and made at least one eye-catching play per practice
2. Landon Smith - Is a handful over the middle
3. Aaron Bradley - playing inside or out, he looked good
4. Brandon Cope - While he opened eyes in Spring practice, he has been hampered by injury, but has looked good in limited action, and has done an excellent job blocking on the perimeter
5. Jordan Reid - has looked good from the slot, on post routes

I'm sure Cochran will also be in the mix. Honestly, if none of these six could play, and Ohio went with Sebastian Smith, Cedric Brown, Justin Wyatt, Ian Dixon, Kawmae Sawyer, and Randy Stites, I think they would be fine. The quality and depth at WR this year is remarkable, though the players are young. Of the top 9 or so receivers, 6 are underclassmen, so WR will be solid for quite awhile.

No doubt, I'm excited about Brunis. We all thought he was a steal once we got a chance to watch his highlight film. Of course, I was excited about S. Smith when he arrived and he was turning heads. Same deal with Justin Wyatt last year before he got hurt. And Cameron Wilson during spring. There's a strange phenomenon in Athens of players showing up, wow'ing folks in practice, and then disappearing with little fanfare.

A group mainly consisting of Cochran, L. Smith and Bradley is OK. However, IMHO, that's the weakest group of WR we've started since I can remember.

Paul--I share some of your viewpoints (espec some which don't resonate though-I-don't-know-why with others).  But I think that you're distinctly wrong about our wideouts.  They'll be just fine this year.

I don't want to be too doom and gloom. Fair enough, lets wait and see.

August Monroe is quite the optimist!

Re: Mr. Brunis and the eye-catching plays. Seems I remember some receivers who had a way of making the routine look remarkable. The thing about those remarkable appearing catches is they rarely have any yards after the catch. Now perhaps the trick is to make the remarkable look routine with the catch in stride so as to produce more yards. If I am being harsh I invite some old WRs to call me out on this.

I'd say that a good receiver is going to make the routine catches, and get yards after the catch, but the exceptional receivers are also going to make some additional catches where you wouldn't expect them to be able to. I'd have to believe Dixon knows what he expects from this receivers.

To me, it's all about the play of the O-line and the linebackers.

No mention of Iowa transfer Cameron Wilson that I have seen anywhere. Has he been practicing?

He did have 1 reception for 8 yards in the first scrimmage but there was no mention of him for the second one.
