A new Hibbets sporting goods store opened recently in Jackson, which is only 40 miles from Athens.

I walked in today just to look around.  Huge shrine of OSU products, nice display of WVU products, nice display of UK apparel.

I asked the young lady clerk who looked like she is about 20 years old, "Do you have any Ohio University gear?"  She replied, "No, they are Division II, we don't carry small college stuff."   I "gently" corrected her.  She said that these are corporate decisions.

Same reply I got over 10 years ago at a former locally owned sporting goods store in Jackson that no longer exists.

Just when we think we've turned the corner on name and brand recognition, we get these reminders that the average person on the street barely has an idea of who or what Ohio University is.  This is true even as close as 40 miles away.  I'm talking casual fans here.

Only those who seriously follow college sports have a clue about Ohio and where we are in collegiate athletics.

The tiny Dunham's in Newark Ohio understandably has a lot of OSU apparel, but has a lot of Ohio shirts and even has Mount Union shirts. Wouldn't say she has a good excuse.

How can anyone in their right mind think Ohio is a Division II school when we are on ESPN all the time.

Question: If as expected the Power 5 win the right to make their own rules, how long before news media, including ESPN, begin to perceive non-Power 5 conferences as minor league?

Followup question: If as I expect that perception to take hold pretty quickly, how long before ESPN loses interest in showing minor league football?

Additional followup question: Once the Power 5 are able to make their own rules, how long before they decide that 85 football scholarships are not enough? How about going back to 105?

Last followup question for tonight: Once Power 5 football scholarships increase, how long before non-Power 5 competitiveness deteriorates?

Yes, I went in there once, not too long after they came to town.  I bought an ankle brace, I think it was, for my basketball wars.  I noted the lack of Ohio gear and complained.  Got some idiotic response (not quite as idiotic as the one Jeff got) and told them I'd not be back until they cleaned up their act.  Since I've had no reports that they have cleaned up their act, I've never been back.  Dunhams, not too far away down the road on E. State, does carry some OHIO stuff, not as much as their OSU crap, but at least they know they are located only a few miles from the OHIO campus.  Hibbets must be run by a bunch a OSU alumni who are members of the TD Club.

Edit: Anyone want to join my unofficial BA Boycott of Hibbets?  Maybe some Saturday morning before a football game, we all show up with picket signs that say:

OHIO FAN BOYCOTT OF HIBBETS
BOBCAT GEAR OR BUST!

OR WE BUST YOU!

From the looks of things she knows how to make money. If someone can show her that bobcat gear will fly off the shelves I can't imagine she'd keep it out of the store out of spite. I stand by my initial thought - get a sales rep in there!  Or you could continue to complain and take personal offense at the comments of a minimum wage earner who doesn't have a working knowledge of college sports.

I live in Jackson and was super excited about getting Hibbet's in town. All that excitement has now gone down the drain....

Perhaps Ohio Ticket sales team could expand their efforts towards outside sales. That'd be great on a resume for any business student looking to go in to sales. Not to mention the increased revenue/exposure for the OHIO athletic department

Nobody could ever complain about that Steve & Barry's chain that bubbled up and went bankrupt in about five minutes during the early 2000s, because I swear that place had every school and organization available. Towson? NYU? Botanical Gardens of San Diego? The 1982 Vilner family reunion potato sack race championship t-shirt?They had it. The shirt would unravel after two washes, but...

If you follow their Twitter page (https://twitter.com/ohioticketsales), it seems like they've started doing more of that this year. Even mentions working with the "Corner Pub" in Jackson...never been there before but apparently Jackson is on the hit list. Perhaps they can head over to Hibbets and show them who's boss

I've never heard of Hibberts and according to their website there is a store 10 miles from my house, so I guess we're even.

Becky with Hibberts just e-mailed a quick response saying Bobcat gear will be in stock before
football season.

While they're at it, they need to get some in the Athens store! There's more WVU than OU gear if I recall. Really?? I don't even know a WVU fan in Athens...

Just goes to show that, if you get to the right person, even a small complaint can get significant results.

Did you specifically mention the Athens store, or other area stores, or did you just concentrate on the Jackson store?

In the end it will come down to what sells. They need turns on their inventory. If they are a sharp operator, and they stock some Bobcat gear, and it sells well, they will stock more. If OSU gear sells well, they will stock OSU gear.

Well then, when it comes in, let's go and support with our pocketbooks. I'm in to buy a new piece of Bobcat gear at the Athens store!
