I think we're overlooking the real issue here. How can they expect to serve beer at games when they can't even manage the current concession stands now?

How much must one donate to qualify for beer under the current Bobcat Club rules?

You want solid Bobcat sports?  You appreciate solid Bobcat sports?  Pay up a bit.  Compare our prices to pro or 'bigtime' sports or concert prices.  We are a helluva bargain.  And it costs to run successful programs.

You don't have to like my viewpoint but the facts/finances are unfortunately difficult to deny.

This bears repeating over and over, so I'm happy to quote it again. I feel like I get a lot of enjoyment for not a ton of money while supporting the school and program. I agree that the taps should be opened in a careful manner for all fans, and I understand not all fans are able to donate as generously, but I don't get the hand wringing over donors (i.e. people who pay more) getting somewhat different treatment. People paying more and then getting more should not be a novel or shocking concept. It happens everywhere and in every transaction in our society. And anyone who says the Rohr Room is full of rich people has clearly never been in there. Though it requires donations that some of us are unable or unwilling to make, gaining access to the areas that serve beer at football and basketball games is a pretty modest hill to climb compared to other D1 programs.

So who wants to really derail this thread and make it yet another one about the fairness of student fees?

I WILL!!!!  Student get raw deal and under these new rules should be getting beer.  The amount taken out for student fees is much more than some of our ticket prices/donation levels.  It's time for McDavis to let the beer flow...

But the student fee goes towards ALL GAMES for ALL SPORTS does it not? You can't equate that to ticket prices for single games or season tickets. And how do you know how much people donate? Just because the donation levels are small doesn't mean people aren't donating more than that. The student fee is also used towards other things on campus, unless I'm mistaken. That can't be your only argument as to why they should allow beer to be sold to students.

Even if beer were sold throughout the stadium, which I believe will be the natural conclusion of all this, I'm not sure how this affects the students. UC, UD and X have been selling beer for a long time and I believe all three DO NOT allow alcohol in the student section. I'm guessing it would be the same for football. Plus, can students really afford $6 or $7 beers? If so, then college has changed since I attended.

Thank you. Why go pay $6-$8 for a beer at Peden when you get 2-4 beers for the same price uptown or even more than that by drinking a case at home? Just because you can watch Ohio football? Some students will laugh at that. Unless they can prove me wrong and the culture of winning has changed that dramatically, I don't see why it's such a big deal.

Who said they would be $6-8 a beer? Kent State sells 16oz cans for $2 up until a half hour before kickoff, and they are available to everyone. I don't know how much they are after that.

Just going by what I've seen at other venues. Pretty sure Kent St. cans were $5 during the game.

The culture of winning has changed very dramatically.
Current freshman at Ohio University were in middle school the last time this program missed a bowl game.
They recall a time when they were looking at colleges to attend and they saw OHIO was in the Top 25 and on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
The culture has changed.

That doesn't mean you are wrong about the rest of your points. College students aren't trying to pay $5 for a beer. We could win a national championship and students wouldn't be paying $5 for a beer. Why should they pay $5 for a beer when they can pay $15 for a case of beers they can drink before they come to watch their team win?

I think this issue is much more relevant to casual alums/fans than it is to students.

I cannot believe this is still an issue in Athens.  It is a sad situation when Kent State has a better set up than Ohio.  They have a nicer stadium, nicer scoreboard, nicer concessions, beer available to everyone, a great DJ in the tailgate lot instead of some lame-ass band playing Hang On Sloopy, better PA system and on and on and on.  Ohio has the better team, which is the priority, but I had a great time attending the game at Kent last week.

We have policies to match our facility...antiquated.

Agreed....Some of this we can't control like the scoreboard or the concessions.  The money for a scoreboard would be steep.  Concessions are tough because of the market we are in.  The only option would be for OU dining to take it over.

Beer sales we can control.  It would help the atmosphere, which would help tickets sales, which would help the budget.....

So people are saying students don't pay for $6-8 beers when they're at pro events? I've personally witnessed students shelling out the money for what passes for beer at other schools when Ohio visits.

This may be news to many of you, but I remember when students snuck all kinds of booze into the game because of the fact no one searched them or really cared that it was brought in.  When the stands cleared there were more bottles and trash than you have ever seen after a game.  It got a little dicey at times.  Students body surfed from the bottom to the top and many were drunk enough I always wondered when someone would get launched over the top.  I've seen bottles thrown.  Don't know if anyone remembers when the bottle was thrown at the Miami game in Oxford?  It seems a lot more civil now and seeing it both ways I kind of like where we are today.  If I wanna drink I can go uptown after the game.  We have more of a 1st class experience today.

We did the OU dining thing and that was a complete hose job! There was nothing in it for athletics, they essentially billed back all of their cost and those cost came from athletics share. They lasted ONE contract.

I see plenty of students paying high prices for beers at Jackie O's all the time so saying students won't pay $5 for a beer is not true at all.

Beer at a premium ($8-12 for a mediocre) is traditional at sports games.  There's gotta be a way there for Athletics to make a grand or two per game.   The cash helps.

There's a big difference between paying $5 for a Jackie-O's brew and paying $5 for a Bud Light

I was at the Made In America music festival this weekend and there were huge lines of people in their early 20s (and probably many in their teens, if we're being honest) waiting to plop down $11 for a Bud Light.

I understand what people are saying that students and young people in their 20s are willing to pay $6-$8 for a beer at a game. Of course they are. My point is when given the alternative, which one are students more likely to choose? Cheap beer at home or in a bar is my guess.

Here's a question. Are Bobcat home games broadcast on a local TV station? Or do bars uptown play the games on TV when Ohio is at home? Most games that are on ESPN3 or WatchESPN would make me think no. But what about ESPN2 or ESPNU games?

I'd guess everybody shows games on 2/U, and there have been enough ESPN3 away games with gamewatches at certain bars that I'd presume those get shown in places (though I wouldn't know). It's pretty easy to hook a PC up to a bar's A/V system.

If that was the case, other schools wouldn't have to bother banning alcohol in student sections because they wouldn't be interested in the first place. If students were allowed to buy it, they would. I guarantee it. They want to drink while at a game.
