I went with 7.  I'm thinking Lowery, Pruehs, Walker, White, Brunis, and Brunson, and a player to be named later.

Edit - Based on today's scrimmage, they may not be able to redshirt Irons. Ohio is so loaded at RB this year, though....

At this point I'm thinking that they might be able to redshirt White and Walker, since neither because there is so much depth, and the most likely people to play are 1-3 offensive linemen (Lowery LT, Preuhs C/RG, and McCray RT) because of needs on the line. There also seems to be depth concerns at TE, so Connor Brown is also possible. In addition, based on numbers from the scrimmages, Irons, Brunis, and Brunson seem to have made the strongest case for playing time simply on merit.

Per Arkley, so far 7 true Freshmen have burned redshirts:
White
Langenkamp
Pruehs
Lowery
Nelson
Ouelllette
Brunis

Also eight Redshirt Freshmen played:
Cope
Polling
Grillot
Moore
D. Brown
Quallen
Cunningham
Porter

Edited to include Brunis, who Arkley added to his blog. The number could still grow as we haven't seen some Doc expected, Irons, Walker, Brown, and McCray .

White almost certainly gets a medical redshirt if he's done for the year, doesn't he? Which would mean he gets to keep the true redshirt for the future if needed.

Yes, if he's done for the year, he'll come off this list. I suspect if it's even close, they'll go ahead and hold him out, but if he's 100%, we'll see him again.

The game notes say five true freshman played.

If one believes the participation reports, it shows that 6 true freshmen played:
Lowery
Pruehs
Ouellette
Brunis
Nelson
White

There can be errors on participation reports, though. Arkely says that Langenkamp also played, and that may be true. The participation reports also shows Windham as playing, which I doubt. Could it have been another 14, Cameron Gunnels? I doubt that, too, but maybe. Another name I wasn't expecting to see on it is WR Oliver Grimmard, a redshirt Freshman.

Akley indicates that Lowery in fact did not play, but Langenkamp did play. That means that those the true Freshmen that played were:
Langenkamp
Pruehs
Ouellette
Brunis
Nelson
White

Some newbies playing because of need.  And some playing because they are good enough.

Beginning to look like some talent is on hand...and more coming.

I'm still not sure about Langenkamp, as he was never in the participation reports. McCray, Walker and Brunson are additions to this list.

Without Langenkamp, we are at 9 True Freshmen playing (8, if White gets his redshirt back). This is by far the highest ever under Solich since 2005, when he played 11 true Freshmen (Stuck, B. Jones, J. White, B. Peterson, Parson, Mitchell, Leuck, J. Meyers, Leuck, Hartke, Kenkel).
