The coaching staff has to try to utilize his talents differently. He is just not big enough to be the every down running back (or the running back in the red zone) and it really shows when he stays in the backfield to pass protect. I'm not trying to bash the guy, I just think the coaches need to think outside the box in the way they use him.

Personally, I would like for him to be working with the receivers. Maybe slot receiver and try a few bubble screens.

I agree with this statement. For the past few years, we have tried to force up the middle runs with running backs who weren't built for that. He is obviously a great player out in space as you can see when he does returns.

The coaches should watch some of the old USC tapes with Reggie Bush and Joe McKnight to get some ideas. I'm not saying he is that level of athlete, but simply that type of athlete.

Agree 1000%. He's not a between-the-tackles runner. Let that job fall to OUellette and Edmonds.

They should be lining Patterson and Robbie Walker up EVERYWHERE possible....keep the defense guessing. Use that at RB sometimes, WR...in the slot.

Just get these guys the ball in open space. Both are quick, athletic guys....Papi White is similar and should be used similarly.

Asking them to pass block or pick up tough yards up the middle isn't fair and not really smart, IMO.

Now...if Daz could just catch the ball a little better this year....

Chip--that's three beers you gotta down.

By the way, I agree with the rest, but Daz does pretty well in pass protection--good technique and no fear.

They need to use him like a Dri Archer.

So why is it that slightly built guys like Chris Garret or Donte Harden were effective feature backs for us in the past?

Because they had veteran offensive lines in front of them. Daz is effective, too, when he has room to run. I gather than the people that would like to see more Edmond, etc, believe that since their is no room to run, you need to use a back that can make a few yards even then, even it it means you don't have as much potential for a long gainer.

I don't want to bash on Daz either but we have been trying to get him the ball via the pass all year and it's not working. He's dropped, by my last count, 8 passes this year. That's more than a few of our WR's have been targeted. I counted at least 3 dropped balls CMU and they were either bubble passes or short screens as you mentioned above.

There is no doubt he makes things happen when he's in the open field but unfortunately, he has a very difficult time catching the ball. Personally, I think we are trying to hard to get the ball in his hands...

Keep him at Running back but get him the ball outside the tackles. That seems to be where he can be the most effective.

At the same time, if he's our starting tailback, you can't just say he will only get the ball outside the tackles because defenses MIGHT just be smart enough to pick up that pattern. Then if we take him out for a larger back, then we are tipping our hand that we are going to try to shove the ball between the tackles.

That's why we need some two back sets.

Two words... Play Action. A genius play for teams who try to guess on the run. But our play calling doesn't effectively use this. We need to run the read option to keep the opponent guessing. Our Qbs are quick enough to get outside and run in space and yet in the past two seasons we have abandoned this play. TT and company dominated with it his first two seasons.

Rawls 217 power. Ripped us (especially converting 3rd downs).

177 not as effective.

Another big thing we don't do (or Tettleton refused to do....and Sprague has been, for whatever reason, minimal in doing)....QB keeping it on the read option.

Tyler refused to do it last couple years...

Sprague has been limited in doing so...

I think Vick was effective when he was on the field. He at least gave the defense caution that he could keep.

Sprague obviously can run....but defenses aren't respecting it when he doesn't do it. He should be carrying 8-10 times a game I think.

it might loosen things up for our RBs sometimes...

But when the read option is 80-90% RB up the middle...easy to defend

See I don't even think we're calling the read option anymore to give them the chance. The way the read option works is that you read a specific player on the field. Usually the DE and If he follows the RB the QB keeps it. If he doesn't the QB hands it off. When we hand it off the entire time I don't think it is from the DE staying home. I think it's because we aren't calling the read option and are just calling designed runs up the middle where the QB doesn't have the option. I can't believe that A. They protect the outside every play. or B. Our Qbs are screwing up the reads this badly. The only way this many of the runs have gone up the middle is if we have abandoned the read option completely

If you go to 1:42ish you see us run it pretty effectively and see an example where the QB keeps it. The DE follows AJ therefor JD keeps it. Now this is where I'm confused because we clearly run it here but I'm not sure if we run it every rushing play. and if we do how is it that our RB's keep getting the blunt of the carries? I have 3 main questions on why are running isn't working. Are the reads wrong? is the blocking wrong? Or are we not calling reads every rushing play
