The coaching staff has to try to utilize his talents differently. He is just not big enough to be the every down running back (or the running back in the red zone) and it really shows when he stays in the backfield to pass protect. I'm not trying to bash the guy, I just think the coaches need to think outside the box in the way they use him.
Personally, I would like for him to be working with the receivers. Maybe slot receiver and try a few bubble screens.
I don't want to bash on Daz either but we have been trying to get him the ball via the pass all year and it's not working. He's dropped, by my last count, 8 passes this year. That's more than a few of our WR's have been targeted. I counted at least 3 dropped balls CMU and they were either bubble passes or short screens as you mentioned above.
There is no doubt he makes things happen when he's in the open field but unfortunately, he has a very difficult time catching the ball. Personally, I think we are trying to hard to get the ball in his hands...
Keep him at Running back but get him the ball outside the tackles. That seems to be where he can be the most effective.
