Leghorns in Athens as the following photo in one of their front booths. I made a copy tonight with my iPhone. I know that I've seen this photo sometime in the past identified as a photo of an early OHIO football game. Do any of our resident collegiate football historians know what period of time this might be? Most of the players have numbers on their uniforms and they are wearing some type of leather helmets, which should help date it to some extent. My guess is that this is some time between 1905-1915, but I'm no expert on dating these kinds of things. Another thing that might help date it is the way the official is in a position almost like a baseball umpire as he examines that play.

Sorry I can't post the photo now, but here's a link to it:

Must be from the second half of a game. The student section is nearly empty.

Thanks OCF.

It's a little blurry, but I think I recognize Tom McCabe.

Leghorns?

Haven't they changed the name to Shades? The original Leghorns, up here in Licking County, changed over to Shades on 30th St., about a year ago and I thought the others were also changing. I believe the local family restuarant has branched out to Dublin and Canal Winchester as well.

That game in the pic is Ohio vs. the Parkersburg YMCA. OCF was student statistician for that game.

They're both changed to Shade after their parent restaurant in Canal Winchester.

Huh . . . the parent company is not the one in Heath?

Oh well, at least I know Witt's on Court St. has its parent company in Licking County. At least we have that to hang our hat on.

You folks are right about the name change. I just typed it wrong. Head and fingers don't always cooperate.

Now, Jeff, are you certain about the ID of the photo? I believe we only played the PKB Y in 1907, twice home and away. Prior to that we had played PKB HS several times and the Parkersburg Athletic Club once. So, am I correct that it was one of the 1907 games? If so, which one? I'm assuming it might have been the away game because the field doesn't look like the one I remember. But at the advanced age of 127 my memory sometimes fails me. :-)

Nevermind, I may not have been correct.

Looks like a scrimmage, all have same jerseys on and there is a coach on the field.

Don't think it's a scrimmage. One team has numbered jerseys, the other doesn't. One team has dark helmets, the other has white. And I think the guy crouching on the right is a ref, not a coach. Besides, the crowd's too big for it to be a scrimmage.

I think the play was BUTM.

Is there an app out there that turns black and white pictures into color? Like they do with the old black and white movies.

Semi-perpetual lurker here. I think the photo is from circa 1927. I did some cursory research of Athenas online. Couple of things pop out: 1) numbers on the uniforms - pictures of the games in 1908 and 1915 do not show numbers, 2) it seems that there is a lot of leg being shown by the coeds in the bleachers at the right - not proper before the roaring 20's, 3) the casual dress of the guys in the bleachers at the center - again not proper, 4) a very similar picture in the 1927 Athena at https://archive.org/stream/athena23ohio#page/144/mode/2up. That picture may be the first half when the stands were full.

I love sports writing in the pre-WWII era. Everybody was Grantland Rice or trying to be.

"..the game was hardly underway before the offense began to function."

And there was a horse-and-buggy shuttle to the stadium.

You really make my day when you channel Billy the Cat! :-)

EDIT: So, is Jeff right, or was it a later game in the 1920s?
