Seems to me PR won't help. During the ECU game last night the announcers mentioned that T'erd's schedule strength is 126. With that, the committee won't give them a second look. For a G5 school to get into the playoffs, they need to schedule snob conference teams and beat them (ala ECU), as well as going unbeaten. I'm sure that when they scheduled Akron, Fiami & Rhode Island in addition to Ohio, they were expecting to also play the likes of ECU, UCF, Houston and Tulsa. Instead, they get FIU, FAU and Old Dominion. Running up the score on their opponents will get them style points in the polls, and maybe a spot in Atlanta, but for playoff consideration the committee will look at who they beat, not how badly they beat them.

Why is the playoff only 4 teams again? (Rhetorical. Don't bother answering)

The first sign you have no chance to make the 4 team playoff is your conference needs to hire a PR firm to try to get you in.....

It is a smoke screen for getting them the non-P5 spot versus ECU. They know the 4 spots are not realistic. I do not think any non-P5 school will ever have a realistic shot. You'd need to beat a P5-conference champ directly not through any transverse, and you'd need to have at least two more P5 wins. I don't think anybody is playing that schedule. Let's say for argument sake that Marshall had kept Louisville on the schedule, beat them, Louisville wins the ACC, and maybe Marshall beats somebody like NCSU, Purdue, or Pitt (future P5 opponents). No way the committee picks them over all of the SECs, the B12, PAC, or the B1G champs or other one loss teams.

The deck was stacked when the 4-team playoff was set up. No non-P5. That's why they specifically created a Highest-ranking slot for the non-P5 in a bowl like the Peach. And they specifically are excluding past years, so even a BSU would have had no chance.

Marshall will not get in the playoffs. They'll only get into the Access Bowl against a P5 school if ECU stumbles and doesn't end the season with a perfect record. I'm hoping for the latter.

ECU already has the loss to South Carolina. They got a lot of recognition for beating VTech and VTech beat the buckeyes, and a big win over UNCheat. Two wins that are less impressive now, but coaches and writers hate to re-slot a team lower that still in winning. The Playoff committee's rating start this week so it will be interesting to see how the order the teams.

oops, I forgot about the loss to the other USC. I'll amend my statement to say that unless ECU stumbles *again* Marshall doesn't have a chance. And, further, if they win out, the Pirates will have a victory over the mighty Temple Owls, which should give them many points with the Access Bowl selection committee. ;-)

I agree. It's ECU's to win or lose. The combined records of each team's remaining opponents is 15-18, so continuing to win probably won't help T'erd. The guys on ESPN last night mentioned Colo St as also being in the mix, but they're ranked just out of the top 25, so I doubt it. Still, the committee might put them ahead of T'erd. Like ECU, they're 6-1 with a SOS in the 20s. They beat Colo (2-5) & BC (4-3), and their only loss is to Boise (5-2).

Putting aside their alleged rule-bending, stupd cow is a very good team.

I think there wasn't much complaining about our loss to them since the talent difference was so obvious.

At this point, all who point to our staff as being so good (err...analyze winning percentages, please, in consideration that we have 5-6 wins from the day the sched is set due to weak OOC and bottom-of-MAC opponents), go to the 'we albin' thread and answer the questions.

Those of us who are realistic aren't expecting any shot in the playoff. What we are hoping for is to get in an Access Bowl. If ECU drops another game, we will stand a very good chance at earning the spot, but only if we remain undefeated, even after the conference championship game.

You're right, our SOS is bad, because we filled it with teams like Ohio University. All we can do is keep winning.

I have been keeping an eye on OU, hoping you guys would pull together a winning season and become bowl eligible (as this would help our SOS). It looks like you're still having issues though.

That is the one plus side about our crappy season: it might cost Marshall millions of dollars in direct earnings and in exposure/free advertising

Right. Because you've been so dominant in that series your AD should have known better.

Not only am I looking forward to Marshall being ignored in bowl discussions but I hope I hear someone at the Heisman ceremony say that Cato might have been invited had Marshall not played OU this year.

I myself would like to see Marshall make the final 4, if not that then the best possible. However comments like you just made about Ohio will not win you any friends here and I'm sure you wouldn't like anyone from this board saying the same at HerdNation. Just remember that team you complain about being so bad on your schedule this year kicked your a## 3 straight years. Maybe some of the Temp fans switched to Marshall.

So the OP starts off with insults about Marshall, calling us Terds and how we don't stand a chance at anything (playoff spot or Access Bowl) and you ladies get all pissy with me for telling the truth about OU?

First lesson here is that one or two Marshall fans on your message board do not represent an entire fan base, so spare me with your, "now I'm gonna just root for Marshall to fail" bit. It's obvious you guys are sour over the loss this year. I felt the same the 3 years we lost.

As for the past few years, we sucked, you guys were really competitive, and I was impressed with what Solich had built. However, I started college in 1996. I only know/have witnessed an overwhelming lead for Marshall in the series over OU. I'm well aware of the entire series record and it still heavily in favor of OU, so no arguing there.

I think some of you are really pissed to have tasted success on a new level with Solich and now you're down again. Maybe he will be able to recreate the same magic or perhaps he's at the end of his career potential. Only time will tell.

Playoff committee isn't buying into Marshall. Unranked in the initial top 25.

With WVU in the top 20...that stings in Herdistan worse than ECU at 23.

Correct, Marshall's out of conference schedule is killing them. They shouldn't be playing three Mac schools in one season. They should only play one Mac team a year and rotate series between Ohio U; Miami and Toledo. With the size of their stadium, they should be able to schedule better teams.

It is a little strange that Marshall would not schedule at least one P5 school, but they don't just have their out of conference schedule to blame, their in conference schedule is horrendous as well. This is definitely not the C-USA they intended to join.

Marshall was scheduled to have Louisville at home this year, but UL asked to reschedule the game due to joining the ACC. You are correct, you will not get respect playing Mac and Cusa teams.

Both conferences need to get back to where we would have at least a couple ranked teams. I fondly remember Gameday going to Bowling Green for the matchup between a ranked BG and NIU.

I would think travel costs has a lot to do with the Marshall schedule. Let's face the cost of transporting all of your varsity teams from texas to florida is very high. Scheduling MAC schools cuts down on those costs.

I don't understand why people are criticizing Marshall for hiring the PR firm. I remember several years ago when Oregon was starting to promote themselves nationally and they rented a huge billboard in Times Square to build Heisman hype for Joey Harrington. All Marshall is doing is trying to market their program. I think it is a smart move which will have trickle-down effects on recruiting, create general awareness about the university and possibly lead to increased donor money.
