WKU's win hurts our bowl chances.

So far Cato has thrown 4 picks, so in the eyes of the Herd fans, whatever happens now will not reflect the true outcome of the game since turnovers can be excluded from any discussion of the outcome. I'm glad for them that their season can be saved by statistical oddities.
Except for Boise State, because their loss to Air Force was legit and totally not due to 5 turnovers.
We are not without our own who ignore statistical oddities from time to time. I think we were actually closer to 8-4 this year except for those oddities.

Marshall will graduate 19 seniors. They will be starting over.

Worth it. I'd rather have no one to root for during bowl season than for our second biggest rival to get all the money, exposure, and recruiting bump that would be expected to accompany a trip to one of the access [i.e. major] bowls

Yes! Love it! (couldn't spell "schadenfraude" if it weren't already spelled on this page but I do love it!)

If I had the energy I'd go dig up all the quotes on the Herd boards about how bad the MAC sucks because WKU beat our best team in WK1.

can't...stop...laughing.

Wonder who they'll blame for this one, since they have never actually lost a game.

I'm guessing Doc will accept the first job that comes his way post season. Then...will Jim Grobe return to Huntington?

The most remarkable thing is that Chuckie just wrote an article the other day saying that he doubts that WKU QB would hurt them. Now that is funny. 8 TD passes. I want to see him write his way out of that article. One astute fan commented that perhaps it was not a good idea to give the other team any locker room fodder.

I know hind sight is 20/20 but I found this article pretty entertaining...

For what it's worth, prior to WKy, the three teams to get the most passing yards against Marshall were Miami (318), Akron (251), and Ohio (236). I have to commend Landon on his prescience, though. ;)

What happens if CSU can't pull this close game out with Air Force and BSU loses to a good USU team. I'm not sure which of those four teams wins the division in the strong half of the MWC. MU would still try to stake a claim. Unless the MWC winner is CSU it would have 3. The AAC champs would have 3. Maybe NIU even gets in this discussion.

Utah State wins the division in that case.

I think a 11-2 NIU would have the edge over a 12-1 T'erd, if the committee really does value strength of schedule. T'erd could have its hands full with LaTech next week, which beat WKU something like 59-10.

Edit: Memphis (!!!) out of the AAC could MAAAAAAAYBE be in the discussion too...but with 3 losses it would take a lot of chaos for that.

Utah St., who lost to Arkansas St., wins the MWC Mountain if that happens. I think that if both minor MWC upsets occur Marshall is in the drivers seat even though they were not coming into the week and lost to a pretty bad team because they can still win CUSA.

Two of Memphis's losses are OOC are to good Mississippi and UCLA teams. They are still in it if BSU loses and especially if Marshall were to lose CUSA.

It occurs to me that WKU could have knocked itself out of a bowl but beating Marshall. It probably isn't true because:
1. Marshall may not have made the access bowl with a win.
2. Marshall may still get the access bowl with the loss
3. WKU might have been 7th in CUSA's pecking order without the win instead of sixth.
4. They may end up 5th now instead of 6th.
5. They may make it into an open slot now that they have 7 wins instead of 6.

But if they were sixth in the pecking order either way end did end up knocking Marshall out and CUSA can't secure another contract then they did knock themselves out of a bowl by beating a ranked opponent.

I think a once beaten Marshall team, a three loss AAC team (be it UC or UCF in the unlikely even Memphis loses) or even USU if it wins the MWC all have a chance to get in before NIU but if NIU is in a major bowl, now that Akron lost, Ohio ends up with one of the MAC's primary contracts.

Although Grobe stated he wanted to continue coaching and interviewed with UAB, I think in his mind he is done coaching. They sold their home in Winston Salem and moved to Georgia about 45 minutes from Atlanta where he has a short drive to Atlanta for his Saturday football studio broadcasts. I think he is probably content to play more golf and be near Ben's family down South. Reading between the lines I assumed he worked out a fair settlement with Wake Forest that allowed him to be financially secure.

You are probably right, but I could see him returning to Huntington in the right circumstances.

WKU should be in the top five among CUSA teams and get one of its primary bowls. The top three should be T'erd, LaTech and Rice. UTEP and MTSU are both 6-5 and play each other today, so the winner is 7-5 and the loser is 6-6. It'd be cleaner if UTEP loses and goes to 4-4 in the CUSA, same as WKU. But beating T'erd yesterday will give them a leg up. Plus they put points on the board; they scored 30+ in every game but one and scored 40+ six times. Makes for good TV.

I would not rule it out. Could be a similar situation to Solich where it is not so much about the money but simply coaching for the love of it and the relationship building with players.

The problem for schools like Ohio and Marshall is bringing in a coach who wants to stay for 6 to 10 years compared to younger coaches who only see a MAC type school as a stepping stone. Solich was a perfect fit with his experience, name brand and the fact he was from Ohio.

One of the problems Grobe had at Wake Forest was after the President of the University died, the new President put more restrictions on players who were on the academic bubble by Wake standards. While they invested on a nice renovation of the stadium, they did not announce their plans for a new IFP until after Grobe left.

I sensed that Grobe lost a little bit of his fire the last few years. Wake did put together a nice tribute for Grobe.

Those posts about stupd cow's fans denial of reality are funny and spot on.

I wrote (and still insist) that when they went undefeated about 10 (?) years ago that they should have been rated no lower than #3. I still insist. It is incredibly difficult--incredibly--to go undefeated. I don't care what your schedule is.

Let's not take joy beyond about 24 hours for stupd cow's loss. We don't have much accomplishment to gloat of lately.

Grobie is enjoying golf, misses coaching, but has the life working for him right now.
