I thought of an alternate adjustment you could try, to see if you like it better. I know that in order to sort the bottom half, you added partial credit for beating teams with near-winning records. As an alternative, you could delete that adjustment, and add a negative score for losing to teams with losing records. If you did it that way, you would only get points for beating teams with winning records, and minus points for losing to teams with losing records. A team with no wins over teams with winning records, and no losses to teams with losing records would end up at zero.

I will incorporate something along the lines of what you have proposed at some point this week. And then compare the rankings of two approaches. (+ vs +/-)

During the phase where I was receiving feedback, multiple posters commented on provisions for "bad losses". I think a +/- approach would address most of those comments.
