This sucks. But I'm sure he has something lined up with more pay.

Sad to see Russ go, but honestly, we’re lucky he stayed at Ohio this long. He’s great at his job, and I’m sure he will be doing big things wherever he goes next.

Yes, timing leads one to believe he's moving on to something else. There will be plenty of eager (and probably young) voices who will want this job. Tough to find anyone with Russ's institutional memory, tho.

We were definitely lucky, and as you said I have zero doubt he will succeed wherever he turns up

I got the impression he’s been looking for a while, and why wouldn’t he? He’s young and there are plenty of bigger fish out there. After a handful of baseball seasons I’d notice his year end posts gave a vibe of he’s happy with there he is, but was also a little miffed that nothing came along yet. But again, young guy trying to make it big, that’s the attitude he should have.

Man, the transfer portal gets worse and worse.

Seriously though, he is one of the best. Hopefully he at least gets some sort of room or award named after him.

We were truly spoiled having Russ for so long.

Would be nice to see Arkley get re-involved with the program, though it's hard to imagine just one person being able to fill all the duties which Russ did.

We had an NFL caliber play-by-play guy calling our games. The guy was such an asset. I'm not sure the Athletic Department ever saw just how good he was. What a bummer. The guy was great at his job. Best of luck. Sad day for Bobcat Fans.

Wonder who will be the next voice. I'm sure there are favorites, but certainly no shortage of those who are interested, qualified, and already have ties to OU

All my core Bobcat memories were called by Russ, a sad day indeed but hope nothing but better things for him moving forward. He is the epitome of class and professionalism and he represented Ohio better than anybody could.

I hope we are able to land somebody with half the Bobcat knowledge Russ provided. So many amazing games and athletes made up his career in Athens, it was truly a joy to listen to and reflect back on.

Thanks for the memories, Russ! From a former athlete, feel free to DM if you're on here somewhere.

Agreed, after they see the pay structure, they will be fighting fo that position.

They have a month to figure it out. I’d say put a veteran like Associate AD like Amy Dean in charge and let her lead the search committee. Been around almost 30 years, she’s got to have her pulse on the situation.

There's a guy (pretty sure his first name is Matt, blanking on the last name) who does a solid job covering sports in Dayton, more TV reporting but he's called at least high school football for that station, plus he's an OU grad. Wonder if he'd be interested or is it a different setup between TV and radio?

Barnes?

He's one of the lead anchors here in Columbus. He's currently in Paris covering the Olympics for NBC.

As you know, they are likely to bring a new guy in for a lot more than the guy who left. This happens frequently in all kinds of organizations and can be very frustrating.

I don't think so, Barnes does mainly news in Columbus. The guy I'm thinking of does mainly sports in Dayton

I hope wherever he goes, it's still in the on-air sports talent space, but with added exposure and pay. I'd love to have him do an Ask Me Anything.

He will definitely be missed and I always appreciated how much of a sports fan he was beyond his broadcast duties. Always felt like I was hearing the games from someone who was truly excited to be there and not just a talking head.

While I am no audio expert, his speech and speed were always very crips and succinct and never used a lot of fillers etc. when speaking for along periods of time-not easy to do IMHO!

Definitely leaving some big shoes behind to fill. Given the season starts in about a month I will be curious what the plan is.

Is Rob C. still going to be around?

I haven't heard that he won't be, so I assume so.

I posted this on Twitter but wanted to put my thoughts here as well:
I would argue that over the last 16 years Russ has been one of the greatest assets to Ohio Athletics and Ohio University. Talented announcer, great ambassador and a work ethic second to none.
He has made every game, win or lose, enjoyable and educational. I love the relationship he has with his family and the passion he brings to everything he does.
We were lucky to have him and I'm sad to see him go. Can't thank him enough. I wish him much success and happiness in whatever comes next for him.

Russ put together a list of some great moments/calls in his time as Voice of the Bobcats. Every Division winner, Bowl win, MAC Tournament Title, NCAA Tournament win, the WBB MAC Tournament win, Penn State, Iowa state, Tommy's magic against Miami, Preston's Triple Double, bookended by the opening kickoff of his 1st year and the walk-off win over Akron in baseball this year in the season finale, with his final call. 16 years in 10 minutes...my goodness.
