I'm shocked at the price tag on a new scoreboard. They want it in place by 2015 when Michigan State comes to town. 3 mill for a scoreboard is way more than what the athletic department has the capacity to fundraise for a luxury item. How could OHIO finance a new scoreboard for Peden?

My daughter works for a sign company that last season installed the new huge scoreboard and LED video screen in Broncos stadium in Denver. Not quite 2 million price tag. It is huge and if you watch a Bronco's game, you will see it every once in awhile. Three million? I just can not imagine wmu needing a scoreboard one third bigger than what the Broncos needed. Perhaps the wmu scoreboard will shoot off fireworks, have side by side waterfalls, and have a rising stage that brings the team up from the underground locker room while a giant fog machine fills the stadium with special effects.

If its 3 million or 2 million the cost of an NFL caliber scoreboard for Peden Stadium isn't something the Athletic Department can throw pocket change out there to get done. The last scoreboard was provided as part of the Pepsi contract. That contract may require that we use that scoreboard for X amount of years. Thus that scoreboard might have to stay and a new one gets built on top of the academic center.

Maybe we can do it as an operating lease or a sale/leaseback such that we essentially are renting it (instead of buying it) and the monthly rent will only be about $2000.

For $3M, they could offer to give everyone that attends a game a free large pizza for the next 16 years.

I'd take a free pizza every game over an LED scoreboard.

No way they put a scoreboard on that new building....wrong thing to do from a PR standpoint, plus it would ruin the look of the structure. We have a wide open area where current board is, so if and when they replace existing scoreboard, it will be there, but on top of "Victory Hill" rather than behind it.

I find it hard to believe that any NFL board cost $2 million. The Bengals (well, actually Hamilton County taxpayers) paid $10 million for theirs -- see the link -- and the Browns spent $120 million redoing the craphole on the lakefront largely to install two LED boards. I'm guessing $3 million is the going rate for an above-average MAC stadium board, scary as that is.

On a related note, I was at Waldo this year and I can confirm that their board was hideously bad and broken. Their need was even greater than ours.

Strongly agree with this, especially given that one is used five times a year and the other is used 10-15 times a month during winter sports seasons.

Agreed. The current scoreboard setup is about as wide as the crown on Victory Hill though so if it is many times larger and on top the hill the hill might have to be widened. Why its behind the hill now is because that is where the supports were for the old scoreboard with placement on the edge of the track before it was removed. It was easier to leave the scoreboard it where it was and roll up the dirt around it.
