I too don't see Wisconsin hiring Coach Solich either. Would it not be hilarious to see Alvarez ask Solich; "Coach, where do you expect this program to be in year 10 under your direction?" Coach Solich: "Are you kidding me? Do you really expect me to be coaching when I'm 80?"

Anyway, I am mildly curious. Should this rumor be true, who do you guys think Ohio would be able to attract as candidates?

The only way I see it happening is if they have a coach in mind who for some reason isn't available now, but might be in two seasons. Solich can hold the fort for a couple years with Andersen/Bielema recruits, run the ball and be bridge to their top choice.

He'd essentially be a plate of cheese and crackers until dinner is ready.

Oh, I just made a cheezy Wisconsin cheese reference and I'm not going to apologize. I promise to brie more careful in the future.

Also, am I getting the sense that Barry Alvarez isn't easy to work with and might be micromanaging? There's NO REASON Bielema left for a bottom-tier SEC school. I just imagine Alvarez is in the head coach's office when the HC arrives at 5:30 a.m., a bag of pork rinds sitting on his stomach, smiling. Barry is totally going to coach the Badgers in the bowl game again, isn't he?

There's NO REASON for Andersen to leave for Oregon Freaking State. Actual live beavers would rather be in Madison than Corvalis, which to its credit had Linus Pauling. BUT LINUS PAULING IS DEAD AND HAS BEEN FOR 20 YEARS. So his presence no longer counts. Why would one leave wonderful, wonderful Madison if the job isn't quite as peachy as it's been considered.

Just to be clear, because I know this Will come up later, no one is saying coach is going to Wisconsin. Paul Chryst would be a favorite along with others from Barry's tree. I really believe coach will honor anything he has committed to his recruits or his AD. That kind of commitment is all Barry is trying to find in his next coach. So in the very likely event they hire another coach we need not here an "I told you so."

If Frank was ever going to jump back into that pressure cooker there can't be too many better places than Wisconsin to do it. A pedigreed program that isn't flashy; heavily tilted to a power running game and "reasonable" expectations in a relative kind of way. If that's what Frank wants, more power to him. He would go with my eternal gratitude and hope for a hugely successful tenure crushing the aspirations of A&M fans everywhere. It's almost like he would be channeling Ohio football with B1G resources.

Agree completely.
I agree with everything said here. Except that the chances of Wisconsin hiring a 70 year old coach are precisely zero. Who knows what gives life to some of these rumors, but everyone speculates on potential candidates while not actually having a clue until the last few names are actually spotted having coffee with an AD. On second thought... I don't believe for one second that this is even a rumor. It's just idle speculation from a network that has more bandwidth than material.

I find this thread fascinating, since some of the OHIO fan base has been saying Frank's time has passed and he's practically ready to be put out to pasture. Now, he may be a serious candidate at Wisconsin and the perspective seems to be changing. I'll bet one of Barry's first questions will be, "Do you know how to run a two-back set?" This will be followed quickly by, "Can your QB go under center in short yardage situations?" Also, I'm sure they will write into his contract that he's not allowed to hire Albin as an assistant coach. ;-)
The situation can change entirely when you're talking about an entirely different set of circumstances. Which is exactly what Wisconsin vs. Ohio is.
Point missed.
Oh I got your point I'm just not surprised that people are thinking its a possibility.

Agree again. As I mentioned in my earlier post in the thread, I don't see it. I just don't. I'd be pretty shocked if it happened. I think your stance of "idle speculation" might hit it on the head.

And if they hire him, they can throw a party to feta man who has worked so dilligently in the coaching profession so long.

Ugh.

Someone at OU is now looking through the records to figure out how I received a journalism degree from the school and if it's revokable.

Getting back to the topic, if Alverez wanted to hire Solich, I would think he'd have done it in 2012, not now. Even then it was a stretch with Frank at 68, but now, at 70, I'd say, no way.

Alvarez is going to coach the Badgers in the Outback Bowl. Man this guy is arrogant. Easy to see why coaches are leaving.

28, I bet they'll win the bowl with him as coach.

L.C., when I turned 70 last month, several friends told me it was the new 58! ;-)

Yup. Pretty clear they are going to have a tough time keeping a coach as long as he's roaming the campus. Alvarez still wants to coach, but he doesn't want to put the work in. Hence, multiple bowl coaching appearances as if he's Alec Baldwin showing up to do another episode of SNL.

I was delighted when Alvarez lost that Rose Bowl. He was so smarmy leading up to that game, as if he could just show up days before the game and lead them to victory like he never was gone. As if he was going "show'em how it was done" and prep work and building the relationships with the kids was unimportant. That bowl was about Barry Alvarez, not the Wisconsin Badgers and it was gratifying that it wasn't rewarded.

Arrogant, probably. A college LB, a very hands on coach, one of the best. He has more bowl experience than anyone he might turn the task to. He actually cares about the outcome. He will take charge of one game. Spin it any way you like. the outcome will be better this way than any other you might think of.

If Tom Osborne had coached the Huskers in bowl games after Solich and Pelini were axed, I'd say the same thing about him. It's not that Alvarez isn't a great coach, it's that great coaches shouldn't be chasing glory after they've exited the stage.

If Bo Schembechler decided he needed to take over after Gary Moeller, I'd have similarly blanched.

It's just weird and self-serving.

Unless 95-year old John Wooden would've wanted to coach a Final Four. I'd have supported that train wreck.

But would you have blanched if Bo Schembechler had decided to take over for Bill Frieder when he decided to bolt UM for Arizona St. right before the NCAA tourney began?

I heard on the radio that all the Seniors on the team came to him in his office, and they asked him to coach them in the bowl.

Wisconsin is the last place Frank would want to go to, there's something really, really wrong going on there with Alvarez. You have a head coach leave before playing in a Rose Bowl and then just 2 years later his replacement leaves after winning 10 games and a Division title to go to... Oregon State? The previous head coach had a statue of his AD in his office, that's just weird.

And don't think Alvarez is offering to coach the bowl game out of the goodness of his heart either. Here's a quote from an article about his last coaching appearance in the 2012 Rose Bowl-

Quote:expand_more
The issue here, of course, is the shocking news that Bret Bielema was leaving Wisconsin to coach at Arkansas. And despite his wish to coach his UW team in the Rose Bowl, Alvarez said "no thanks, we got it from here."

Then, after a day or two of hemming and hawing, Alvarez announced that he, the old coach with bad knees, would hobble off the bench and coach these young men in the biggest game of their lives. He's coached in the Rose Bowl before, winning three of them.

You could hear the sigh of relief from Badgers nation. Barry to the rescue. Bucky was smiling.

So far so good, and then Alvarez, smiling wide, took the step that carried him right into the muck of the biggest mud hole around.

He met with the UW Athletic Board and afterward said, "I'm not doing it for free. I'm getting paid 1/12th of the coach's salary, which is fair."

Bielema was making about $2.6 million so 1/12th of that is about $217,000.

Almost a quarter of a million dollars for coaching one football game that Alvarez probably won't actually do much real coaching. Let's face it, he's just a figurehead and he's going to give the pregame speech.

Now, I don't know how much money Barry Alvarez has. But nobody's holding any benefits for him. His salary as AD is $1 million a year. He's probably got more money than any 10 of us who are reading this column. He needs another $217,000 like I need another Big Mac.

What this smacks of is greed, ugly, self-motivated greed. Scrooge is real and he's dressed in UW colors. Alvarez himself decided he'd be the one to get this job and pay himself all this cash.

Why Frank, or any coach really, would want to step into that is beyond me.

Or maybe this is why Pelini has been stringing YSU along.

In his 17 or so years as an Athletic Director, Pederson has hired a lot of head football coaches:
1997@ Pitt Walt Harris - went 52-44 for Pitt .541
2003@ Nebr Bill Callahan - was 27-22 at Nebraska .551
2011@ Pitt Mike Haywood - fired about 15 days later
2011@ Pitt Todd Graham - 6-6 at Pitt .500
2012@ Pitt Paul Chryst - 19-19 at Pitt .500

To me the list of coaches he replaced is more impressive:
Johnny Majors - 185-137-10 .572
Frank Solich - 58-19 (at the time) .753
(Interim Coach Bo Pelini - now 67-27 .713)
Dave Wannstedt - At Pitt 42-31 .575
