So I had to check Chuck Landon's twitter:

Could play a Big Ten team but instead gonna play Northern Illinois ... 4th MAC foe of season

I think in this case NIU and Chuck would agree. This may be the "kiss your sister" bowl, and I have nothing against sisters -- I have two of them. ;-)

Landon Logic-

Northern Illinois, 11-2, 5th 11+ win season in a row, BCS Bowl participant 2 yrs ago = Irrelevant.

Regular Illinois, 6-6 = Relevant.

NIU is probably the best football school in the state this year. They beat Northwestern -- who defeated Missouri, Wisconsin and Notre Dame -- and probably would have beaten Illinois if they had played.

Agreed. Would much rather have each team showcase their talents against schools from other conferences.

And NIU is the best team in Illinois.

Northwestern did not beat Missouri. They did not even play this year.

Funny you mention that. From his Sunday column (prior to bids being announced):

So, the Bahamas and Boca Raton bowls don't belong in the conversation anymore. Marshall accepting a bid from one of those third-tier, first-year bowls would be an embarrassment and completely unacceptable.

"Remember, Marshall is 12-1 and Conference USA champion. That gives MU some measure of respect and clout. "

Wrong again, Chuck. The hits just keep comin'

I stand corrected. They did, however, beat Notre Dame and Wisconsin, which now seems like less of an accomplishment, after they fell apart against the Evil Empire.

You can see why NIU is making the push and investing heavily into the football program and stadium.

This Marshall team strikes me as a really good example of just how feeble it is to try and compete in the third tier (Tier one, elite powers; Tier 2, other Big 5 teams; Tier 3, everybody else) of FBS football right now. Marshall went 12-1 and gets a s%$#^& match up against a MAC team at 6pm on a Tuesday to show for it. They'll likely lose money, play in front of a half empty stadium, and get completely mediocre ratings. What's in this for them, exactly?

It's just not a remotely equitable situation. It's long past time for schools at our level to have serious discussions about what comes next, because we're not eligible for the national championship and our bowl tie-ins result in losing money.

Put it like this: If Texas and Oklahoma are sitting there with one loss instead of TCU and Baylor, is there any chance at all they both get left out? The committee went and took the biggest brands, regardless of on field results. If a TCU or Baylor can't even get equitable treatment alongside the teams in their own conference, what hope exists for the Ohios and Marshalls of the world? What's the point of all of this?

The fact that their schedule was so poor, I'm not sure how they even can whimper about this.

I really think if the Big 12 had a championship game, the winner of that game would have gotten the 4th playoff spot. The "co-champions" thing (really, is there no head-to-head tiebreaker?) gave the committee an "out" for not selecting either.

Bull$h1+. The committee took an out. We all know that the only reason TCU is out is because they are TCU. If Texas played the same schedule with the same results and won their last game 52-3, do you think there's a chance in hell they drop out? Quit making excuses for the new version of a corrupt system. And believe me, I've no interest in defending TCU or any religious Texans for that matter.

Do teams really lose money in bowls?

I'm not making any excuses for the system. And yes, I think that if Texas were in the same position, they would have been omitted as well. No championship game = less chance for one more win vs. a quality opponent and I think that's what it came down to.

What system would you like to see implemented?

There is no answer to this and that's what is so frustrating. People just won't let it go. Obviously, any form of tournament is out (Urban Meyer himself is already complaining about the extra game this year); a computer driven poll is out; vanity polls are out (this committee and everything that preceded the BCS).

Ask yourself, Why isn't a conference championship followed by a showcase, bowl trip enough (anymore)?

The only answer I have: A large number of football fans can't live with ambiguity and ESPN is only to happy to feed the argument with more football programming.

Then why the charade? Why move TCU into the poll knowing that they couldn't win an outright championship and don't play a title game? If that's a factor, why are they even included? I just want a system where when a team earns its keep on the field, they aren't dismissed for ratings or money.

It goes both ways. If Oregon, Florida or Ohio St. (I think Alabama was in win or lose) would have lost in their conference championship game, then not having a conference championship game would have been an advantage.

I believe the Big 12 is petitioning the NCAA to have a championship game. If they don't get it, could pave the way for UC to the Big 12.

Those are true, but I'd rather have complete ambiguity than the false notion of a true champion.

So, just how bad would TCU have to have beaten Iowa State to keep their spot? Were they punished for not scoring 70? Punished for giving up a field goal?

If Ohio State loses vs. Wisconsin, Baylor likely is in given their head-to-head win vs. TCU. I don't know why that didn't play into it earlier in having TCU over Baylor. That would have been an interesting Big 12/Texas controversy.

Also, if you are Florida State, why aren't you ranked #1 all year? -- defending national champion, undefeated season.

How many years do we have to wait to get to a 12 (byes for top 4 seeds) or 16 team playoff? 8 Team playoff can't be that far off.
