So you should only root for a team if you went to school there?
When we manage to get 7000 or 8000 in the Convo, you actually think they all went to Ohio? I have six tics in Section 2 and the different folks I bring have no such connection, but they root for Ohio. I only wish we could get the Walmart fan, to grow our fan base because if not for them the Convo would be quite empty.
I completely support catering to the Walmart fan to grow the fanbase. I've actively campaigned for it (at length) on this site.
That doesn't change anything I've said above. You should root for the school you went to. Period. If some other fanbase can steal your allegiance, good for them. In today's NCAA money race, that is how championships are won. Why rely on strictly alumni as donors when you can convince others to help the cause? That is brilliant strategy. It's like free money.
To my above post, I would add that I also excuse family ties. Your parents, siblings, or kids went to a school. Go ahead and root for them. Still should be after your own school...
I agree with this, and think about it a lot before I get too wound up about OSU, which happens too often unfortunately.
At my peak sports fan-ness, I'm a college hoops fan and Reds fan above all else. Because I grew up around it, I root for THE University of Cincinnati . I always have, and likely always will. It's a connection I have with my pops, whose degree is from there. It's also where my folks met. My sis is a graduate of THE University of Dayton, and I root for the Flyers, and go to an occasional game there too. I believe it's the premier basketball experience in our fine state. (THE: hey, they do it, we all might as well too)
At both places, I absolutely openly cheer for another school. I do it without any second thought at all. For me, as The Optimist said, it's about rooting for where I have a personal connection of some kind. For some reason, not everyone has this same approach. While I'm not likely to ever openly utter the words "Go 8ucks" anytime soon, I am trying to at least respect those who have a similar connection in the way I do to schools that aren't my own.
All that said, I don't make 2-3 trips a month during basketball season, and 3-4 trips during football season to Cincinnati or Dayton. I come to Athens, my own Alma mater instead, as many of you do as well. Frankly, I feel sorry for those who are sports fans that are consistently missing the opportunity to connect with their Alma mater. It has been, and continues to be one of the most rewarding ways I spend my time.
