2012? Did they tour Good Works? I may have met them!

I can't say for sure. Reason: There were times during the day when Lynne and Jose were together while Peter and I were elsewhere.

I agree with most of the remarks here, but I don't think I'd go so far as to say that Akron draws poorly for basketball. They usually have decent sized, involved crowds. I like going to games there and at Kent for that matter.
Jeff, I see Akron and Kent basketball box scores in the ABJ. A typical Akron home crowd runs between 3,000-4,000. Rhodes Arena seats about 6,500. Given that Akron has rolled up 20+ wins for close to a decade, I'll stick with saying the Zips draw poorly and that campus culture is a major culprit.

Isn't Marshall largely a suitcase college that empties on the weekends too?

I hear everyone spends their weekends at the mall. Tough to compete.

Yes and no. Marshall is definitely a commuter campus, but Marshall athletics dominates the Huntington-area culture so much that it doesn't really matter. People go home, people come back, people go back home.

It just depends on what your scale is. Compared to Ohio and Toledo, they draw poorly. But Akron's attendance in a slightly down year is just behind Buffalo's for third place in the MAC.

I think both culture and winning clearly have a part in attendance. With Ohio having a winning tradition in basketball and a setting that leads to high student and alumni attendance, Ohio dominates the MAC in basketball attendance. In football, where the tradition is much poorer, Ohio's attendance is much more average, but I think even before the Bobcats were any good at all, attendance wasn't bad because of the way students and alumni connect.

Re:football attendance, Ohio has been at or near the top in the MAC for several years, not "much more average". I know we're talking about "paid", not at all actual attendance, but everybody counts the same way more or less. By the way, the king of the MAC-NIU averaged less than 14,000 this year-ouch!

Near the top but pretty similar to most teams (aside from a few like Eastern Michigan). In basketball, Ohio has been triple most MAC teams. No other MAC school even remotely compares.

I understand what you're saying about Ohio being the highest in basketball, but if you think 5000-6000 difference is pretty similar, that's not right. The fact is that we are doing well in football even though we aren't historically a football school. And it's not just 1 or 2 years that we've been #1. Give the AD and the fans some credit where due.

I'm just saying our football attendance is good on a MAC level. Our basketball attendance is good on a national level. I think football could get that way if its tradition reached that of the basketball program.

I see what you mean, just wondering where we rank nationally. I might look that up.
Addition: Ohio #73 in 2013, #85 in 2014, not bad, beat a few P5 schools.(of course many of the schools with lower attendance are capacity limited)

I know that EMU has this problem as well. How many other MAC schools would this also apply to?
As of '07 when I graduated, I'd say most schools we went to were 'suitcase colleges.' The only ones that seemed not to be were NIU and Fiami, depending on the weekend, and to a lesser extent - BGSU.
