MWC is considering having its championship game between the two "best" teams in the conference (by whatever measure) rather than the two divisional champs. http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/writer/dennis-do...

They're doing it in order to avoid a highly rated team from being upset by a mediocre team, which would kill their chances for losing out on a golden ticket bowl game. If they do this, it would make divisions as useless as they are in b-ball. What would a division championship mean to a team other than a worthless title and maybe a hardy hand clasp. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iisMlRGigIE

If everyone else has to move to this the MAC will have to go to that format. Scrapping the MAC football divisions would be a good thing. More cracks at Toledo and NIU.

On the radio they were discussing the problems of the Big 12. They can't split into divisions with only 10 members, so they can't have a conference championship, which hurts them in terms of getting into the Championship games. It was suggested that they are considering having a conference championship game anyway, with the #1 and #2 team from the regular season facing off.

In my mind, the only use of divisions in hoops used to be something that resembled consistent scheduling. Now that is out the window, I still don't see the use for divisions in hoops or football.

L.C., it my understanding that the B12 can't have any kind of championship game without 12 teams. They asked the NCAA for a waiver, but I don't think it's been granted, at least I haven't heard that it has.

With The New World Order, there's talk of doing away with the 12-team requirement for divisions or even requiring a conference to have divisions in order to have a championship game. B12 already has each team play the other nine teams in the league, so a championship game at this point would be unnecessary. B12's ADs have decided to wait at least another year before addressing it again. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12828961/b...

I understand that programs like Cincinnati, BYU etc.(just using examples, not debating their merit) aren't as attractive as some other schools, but I don't know why the Big 12 seems to be so dug in on not expanding (publicly at least) if having 12 teams will solve their problems. Is it a financial restraint-that the pie will have to be cut into more pieces?

No, it's a financial restraint on the G5 conferences -- the MAC suffers from having 13 rather than just 12 teams. But, the rules for the P5 are different, they can have as many teams as they like and each team will still get it's full share. The size of the pot just increases for that conference.
