Hey OCF, did that marketing guy turn OHIO into VATECH?

A related note, i remember WAYYYY back when VATECH came into Grover (I think) and beat the heck out of OHIO. I think I was still in high school and my future wife was already a Bobcat...I called her long distance that weekend and said, "who the heck is Virginia Tech".

They may have been second fiddle to UVA way back when but that is a lot better than being second fiddle to the OSwho, UC and a bunch of other schools in the State. VATECH was #2 but once they started winning big, they quickly turned to (probably) #1 in Virginia. I just don't see the comparison because we can win and will still be 3 or 4 or whatever in the pecking order in Ohio.

Same with Penn State? I doubt there is a College in PA that would give them a run for their money no matter what (please don't say Pitt or Temple could).

Casper71, I think that game you are talking about was on January 2, 1968, in Grover Center when VaTech beat OHIO 74-65. We played the Gobblers fairly often back then. They won most of the games, but we did pick up a victory every now and then. I looked it up and our all-time record against VaTech is 2-6. Our two victories were in 1971-72 in Athens, 88-79, and again in Athens in 1976-77, by the score of 82-77. The most striking thing about that last victory is that it came with Dale Bandy at the helm.

Wow, I thought one of those games was like 80 something to 40 something...maybe it was in blacksburg? Where do you find those historical scores anyway? I looked all over the net and couldn't find them...

I have a copy of the old printed media guide. They stopped printing them several years ago, but you can find them online at:

For some reason I could't find a recent basketball media guide but only this five year old one on a third-party site. The current football was on ohiobobcats.com, but is also difficult to find.

Correction: the football media guide link that I posted, though on ohiobobcats.com, is also an old one -- 2006. Can anyone find a link to more current versions of these media guides? Or, are they no longer available? If so, that needs to be remedied in some way.

And, the year was: 1966-67! With an 87-47 loss to VATECH in Blacksburg not Athens. My wife's Frosh year and the year before I joined her in Athens for the best 4 years of our lives!!!! I had just never heard of VA Tech before that year...hey I was just a 17 year old Senior in high school:)

I used the novel approach of eschewing search engines in favor of finding it directly on the Ohiobobcat.com website:

Using your unique, novel approach, L.C., I was able to find record books for both men's and women's basketball. Apparently, they no longer print a media guide for these sports, but they update the record portion of the old media guides and publish them online each year as record books:
