I'd have to disagree with you, not about our level of knowledge, but about what's wrong with football. Sure, it's true that our knowledge is limited. That's a given. So what? This poll, by it's very nature acknowledges that. It doesn't take itself seriously. Note that the poll is for the "favorite", not the "best". Best is an absolute standard, while favorite is purely subjective. Someone could be our favorite player, and not be very good at all.

If this were a poll to really determine the best players, and were real awards at stake, I'd agree with you, but it's not. It's just an off-season, idle time killing, poll to stimulate conversation, and memories of past players. What is wrong with that? And, how is that something that is wrong with football?

In my opinion what is wrong with football is not that fans enjoy it, and want to talk about it even when it's not being played, but when fans start thinking they know more than they do, and start trying to be more than just fans.

OK, sorry, I misunderstood you. Yes, though, I definitely agree. The thing is, if you count a TE as half a lineman, then 5 1/2 of the players on the offense are the big guys up front. Without them, the other 5 1/2 guys will accomplish very little, regardless of how good they are, yet few people know the names of the linemen, much less watch what they do.

I think that TV has a lot to do with the problem, since the camera always follows the ball carrier. I wish the color commentators would spend a larger portion of their time on replays pointing out just why the play did or didn't work, giving credit or blame to the guys up front.
