Just read in the local Colorado Springs paper that the 3 FBS schools in the state are spending big bucks to update their football facilities. CU is spending $156,000,000 to upgrade their football complex ( including a 16,000 sq ft locker room and 8,000 sq ft players lounge), CSU is spending a $220,000,000 on a new stadium, and Air Force is spending $30,000,000 to upgrade their stadium. Football is a big money sport, but where will this end?

My thought when I read that is they will never see a commensurate return on investment. I love football too, but that sounds like a tremendous waste of resources.

A lot depends on the shape the facilities are now in and whether they have a moneyman/woman footing a big chunk of the bill. Of course, you can build a palace but it really doesn't matter if you field court jesters.

Well, CU undoubtedly has some of the worse P5 facilities in the nation. CSU wanted an on campus facility. Air Force's stadium is around 55 years old, I would guess and probably needs some updating(like big donor boxes).

No doubt, CU has some deep pocket alums who could make some big contributions, but I'm out of the loop who is backing these upgrades, but it's probably been in the Denver paper. Their facilities and lack of institutional support are often noted as holding them back from getting better recruits.

CSU making that large of a commitment makes me think they've got the mindset that they'll someday surpass what Colorado currently is. How big is the new stadium going to be?

There has been a great deal of debate about the whole thing as you might expect. They originally had a $110,000,000 goal for donations. That didn't happen. It seems that they would like to be a future target for a P5 conference(big 12?), but how likely that is has to be debatable. They are not CU, but would like to be considered their equal. Sound familiar?

CU had a goal of $47,000,000 ( 1/3 of original estimates) and went ahead with the project even though donations have been less than that so far -that sounds familiar too, but at least they had a more realistic goal. Their seating capacity is around 53,750.

CSU should do their best to try and recruit BYU back into the league. That's about the only thing that could make their stock higher. The Mountain West totally got screwed over as soon as TCU, Utah and BYU bolted. Had they all stayed we could have been talking about a P6 instead of a P5. A league with TCU, BYU, Boise State, Utah, Colorado State, SDSU, Fresno State, Utah State, Air Force and others looks great on paper and covers a good portion of the country.

In the beginning of realignment, I thought Utah, BYU and TCU all would have gone to the Big XII. It would have been a perfect fit. But that was before Colorado decided to go to the PAC 12. I know why they left and they are probably better off for it, but man it looks silly now.

Colorado has wanted to be in the PAC forever, just like Nebraska has wanted to be in the Big Ten.

Honestly I think it would have made more sense for the Big XII to have shifted west rather than east. Adding chunks of the MWC rather than West Virginia might have covered less populous areas, but it would have given them top billing in those areas. By contrast, say they fill in the gap between Texas and West Virginia by adding Cincinnati and Memphis, sure, that adds some heavily populated states, but they won't put much dent in the B1G mindset in Ohio nor the SEC mindset in Tennessee.
